Volleyball Falls in First Round of MAAC Championship to Canisius

Niagara University, NY - Niagara volleyball's season ended at the hands of Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius 3-1 Tuesday night inside the Gallagher Center.

The Purple Eagles end the season 12-15 (12-6 MAAC), while the Golden Griffins improve to 12-17 (9-9 MAAC).

Set One

Canisius jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Kills by Kinga Wronska and Syndey Wilkes kept the Purple Eagles in the set with a 11-6 Golden Griffins lead.

The Golden Griffins grew their lead to 21-12, but Niagara added a couple more points at the end of the set before Canisius took it 25-14.

Set Two

The Purple Eagles fell behind early again, trailing 8-4 but saw kills from Wronska and Janiah Robinson.

Canisius then grew their lead to 17-8 with an eight point run. Wronska added four more kills and Tolliver added one but it was not enough as Canisius gained a two set advantage 25-18.

Set Three

Both teams traded points at the beginning of the third set until Niagara went on a four point run behind kills from Tolliver and an ace from Kylie Blessing to take a 11-6 lead.

Canisius rallied back to make it a one point game, 12-11 in favor of the Purple Eagles. 

The teams then traded point back and forth until Niagara went on another five point run sparked by kills from Wilkes and Tolliver and another ace from Blessing to grow the lead to 22-18.

Two kills from Robinson and one from Wronska gave the Purple Eagles the victory 25-21 and forced a fourth set.

Set Four

Niagara built a 4-0 lead behind kills from Tolliver and Wronska.

The Purple Eagles maintained their early momentum, extending their advantage to 17-9 as Canisius struggled with attack errors.

The Golden Griffins came back with a 9-1 run, to cut the set to a 20-18 lead for Niagara.

A kill from Wilkes and errors from Canisius set up set point for the Purple Eagles at 24-19, but Canisius ended the game on a 7-0 to take the set 26-24. 

Game Notes

Niagara is now 45-50 all-time against Canisius

Schaefer's 18 digs put her at 548 on the season which puts her ninth all-time in a single season for the Purple Eagles

Wronska tallied 17 kills leading the Purple and White

Robinson added three blocks to bring her season total to 90 which led Niagara
