Volleyball Sweeps Battle of the Bridge Rival Canisius

Niagara University, NY – Niagara Volleyball (11-10, 11-2 MAAC) defeated Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius (10-13, 8-5 MAAC) in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 26-24, 25-17) on Monday night at the Gallagher Center.

Set One

Niagara came out firing in the opening set, jumping to an early 5-3 lead behind two kills from Kinga Wronska.

A service run by Mia Schaefer helped Niagara extend their lead to 16-6 with kills from Wronska, Sydney Wilkes and Liana Tolliver

Canisius attempted a late rally, cutting the deficit to 24-19 but Niagara closed out the set on an attack error by the Golden Griffins to take a 1-0 match lead.

Set Two

Canisius got out to a 8-5 lead, but the Purple Eagles rallied back starting with a kill from Tolliver to gain a 9-8 advantage.

The teams traded the lead until the Golden Griffins went on a six point run to lead 19-15. Niagara then scored six of the next seven points with Wilkes leading the way with three kills to take a 22-20 lead.

Canisius knotted the set up at 24 but a kill from Wronska and a Golden Griffins attack error gave the Purple Eagles a 26-24 victory and lead 2-0.

Set Three

After the teams traded points early, Niagara gained control with a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead as Payton Lee got things started with a kill.

The Purple Eagles never gave the lead back with Wilkes getting four kills, Janiah Robinson with three and Lee with two to take the final set 25-17 and secure the sweep.

Niagara is now 45-49 all-time against Canisius

The Purple Eagles have won the last three home contests against the Golden Griffins

Wilkes led the way for the Purple and White with 12 kills and a .426 hitting percentage

Coming off her Co-Libero of the Week win, Mia Schaefer recorded 23 digs

Robinson tallied four blocks to grow her season total to 66
