Poughkeepsie, N.Y.—The Niagara tennis teams traveled to Poughkeepsie on Sunday to take on Marist. The women's team improved to 4-0 in MAAC play with a 5-2 win over the Red Foxes. The men fell 6-1 to the Red Foxes.
Women's Recap
Doubles
Coral Rodriguez and Gabriela Melo notched their seventh doubles win of the season as they won 6-2 in second doubles, they are 3-1 in MAAC play as a doubles team.
Jadia Borg and Enrica Favaron improved to 4-2 as a duo as they won 6-2 in third doubles. They also improve to 3-1 in MAAC play as a doubles team.
Singles
Melo was slotted in third singles and improved to 9-4 in her freshman season while notching her fourth MAAC win of the season. She won the first set 6-4 before earning the win with a 6-1 win in the second set.
Borg picked up a two-set win in fourth singles as she won the first set 6-4 before securing the sweep in the second set with a 7-5 win. Borg is now 4-0 in MAAC play this season.
Mercedes Velasco secured the win for the Purple Eagles as she earned a three-set win in fifth singles. She won the first set 6-4 before falling 6-4 in the second set. In the third set she won 6-4 for her third MAAC win of the season.
Favaron completed a 2-0 day as she won in three sets in sixth singles. She fell 6-2 in the opening set and bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second set. In the third and final set she earned a point for Niagara as she won 6-2. She is now 10-6 in dual matches this season and 4-0 in MAAC play.
It is the first time that Niagara has started 4-0 in MAAC play since they started 5-0 in MAAC play in 2012-13.
Men's Recap
Doubles
Trevor Masi and Tanner Bedard continued their strong season in first doubles as they won their seventh doubles match of the season. They defeated the Red Foxes 6-2 for Niagara's lone doubles win. They are 3-1 in MAAC play this season.
Singles
Bedard notched his ninth win of the season and increased his winning streak to seven matches with a two-set win in first singles. He won the first set 6-2 before securing the win in the second set with a 6-1 win.
Gurustat Makkar was the only other Purple Eagle to win a set for the Purple Eagles. He won the first set he played in fifth singles. He fell 6-4 in the second set and 7-5 in the third set.
The Purple Eagles are now 7-4 overall this season and 2-2 in MAAC play.
Up Next
The Purple Eagles close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches. They open the weekend on Saturday at Fairfield before closing out the regular season against Quinnipiac on Sunday.
