owson, MD—The Niagara baseball team opened a three-game series with Towson on Friday. The Purple Eagles mounted a late comeback but fell to the Tigers 8-6.
How it Happened
Towson opened the scoring in the first inning as they pushed across four runs on three hits and a Niagara error.
Neither team scored again until the fourth inning. Eric Rataczak opened the inning with a double to left field and then he advanced to third on a groundout. Matt Ward then doubled home Rataczak with the first Purple Eagle run.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers added four more runs to make it 8-1.
The Purple Eagles responded in the top of the seventh. Kelly Corl opened the inning with a single to right center. Nick Monile then singled to center field to put runners on first and second. After a double play, Brady Desjardins singled home Corl from third. Three pitches later, Rataczak doubled to left center to bring home Desjardins from first to make it 8-3.
Niagara looked for a comeback in the ninth, Monile singled with one out to start the rally. Nick Groves the put two runners on with a single. On a 2-0 pitch Desjardins homered to right field to cut it to a two run Towson lead. Despite the ninth inning come back attempt, the Purple Each could not tie the game.
Niagara Notes
· Monile, Groves and Rataczak all finished the game with three hits.
· Desjardins drove in four runs for the Purple Eagles. It is the first time in his career that he has driven in four runs in a game.
· Maximilian Ramirez IV started on the mound and went 5.0 innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out six in the game while also getting seven flyouts.
· Jack Dickinson pitched the final 2.2 innings for Niagara while not allowing a run on three hits. He tallied two strikeouts along with three flyouts and two groundouts.
· Niagara notched 14 hits in the game, it is the 10th time this season that Niagara has had 10 or more hits in a game.
· It is the first time since 2022 that Niagara has played Towson.
