Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team fell 6-1 on Thursday night to the Mercyhurst Lakers.
First Period
The Lakers came out of the locker room looking to avenge a 4-1 Purple Eagle win on Tuesday. Mercyhurst opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Just over six minutes later at the 6:42 mark, Mercyhurst made it a 2-0 game. They extended the lead to three at the 16:27 mark.
After the first period Niagara trailed 3-0 despite leading 11-9 in shots. Niagara also led 13-8 in the faceoff circle.
Second Period
Mercyhurst scored twice more in the second period while Niagara could not find the back of the net.
The Purple Eagles continued to dominate the faceoff circle as they went 11-5 in the faceoff circle. After two periods Niagara was 24-13 in the faceoff circle.
Third Period
Niagara got on the board 2:08 into the period as Shane Ott scored his fourth goal of the season. The Purple Eagles worked the puck around the zone as Luke Mylymok passed the puck to Carter Randklev. Randklev teed the puck up for Ott as he one timed home Niagara's first goal.
Mercyhurst took back a five goal lead as they scored at the 12:22 mark of the period.
Niagara outshot the Lakers 17-11 in the third period.
Niagara Notes
· Niagara outshot the Lakers 35-34 in the game.
· Mitchell Day made 17 saves on 18 shots in just over 26 minutes of relief time.
· The Purple Eagles dominated the faceoff circle as they won 61.0% of the draws as they went 36-23 overall.
· Tyler Wallace finished with a team high 13 wins as he went 13-7 in the circle. Drew Vieten went 9-4 for a game high 69.2 winning percentage.
· Niagara generated eight shots on their three power plays while converting on one of them.
