EMMITSBURG, Md. - Niagara men's soccer team fell to Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in a closely contested match at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday.
Â
How it Happened
Despite playing a man down for most of the second half, the Purple Eagles (2-8-2, 0-3-1 MAAC) showed resilience against the Mountaineers (3-7-3, 3-0-1) with Niagara's defense, led by goalkeeper
Jamie Barry, keeping the game within reach throughout.
Â
Barry made five crucial saves, including a spectacular stop on Graham Dougald's attempt in the 18th minute. The Purple Eagles' backline, featuring
Alberto Sanchez Cervera, who played all 90 minutes, managed to limit Mount St. Mary's to just one goal despite facing 14 shots.
Â
Niagara's offense came alive in the second half, outshooting the Mountaineers 7-0 after the break.
Matheus Spina and
Gianluca Del Priore each forced saves from Mount St. Mary's keeper Julian Marcos, while
Paddy Kildee-Doolan's 58th-minute shot tested Marcos as well.
Â
The Purple Eagles' comeback efforts were hampered when
Luca Buscaglia received a red card in the 56th minute. Despite being a player short, Niagara continued to press, earning five corner kicks in the second half alone.
Â
Mount St. Mary's lone goal came from Dominik Topolsky on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
