Niagara Picks Up A Pair of Wins In Home Opener

Niagara University, N.Y.—Both the men's and women's tennis teams picked up their first dual match wins of the season as the both defeated Daemen on Saturday. The men's team won 7-0 while the women won 6-1.

Men's Recap

Doubles

Tanner Bedard and Trevor Masi teamed on Saturday for the first time this season in the first doubles position. The duo played 14 matches together last season and went 7-7. They opened their season on a high note as they took down the top doubles team from Daemen, 6-3.

Vid Maric and Roberto Vaca paired up for second doubles, the duo won their first dual match as a doubles team as they took the 6-3 win.

In third doubles, Rohan Srivastava and Bryce Bodak secured the doubles sweep as they took the third doubles match 6-3. This was the first time the two teamed up in a dual match.

Singles

Manuel Alonso was slotted in the first singles position. He dropped the opening set he fell 6-3. He responded in the second set with a 6-3 win. In the third set he won the match by winning the set 6-2.

Maric used the momentum from the doubles match into his second singles match. The freshman took the opening set 6-4. In the second set he secured his first dual match win with a 6-3 win in the second set.

Bodak appeared in the third singles match. He opened the match with a 6-1 win in the first set. He fell in the second set 6-4. He notched the wins and the point for the team with a 6-3 win in the third set.

Gurustat Makkar picked up a straight set win the fourth singles position. In the opening set he won 6-1 before securing the match with a 6-1 win in the second set.

Vaca looked to go 2-0 on the day following his doubles match win. He was slotted in the fifth singles position, he took a 6-1 win the opening set. He took the second set and the win as he won 6-1 in the second set.

Salvador Vazquez picked up his first dual match win of the season in the sixth singles position. He took the first set 6-4 and won the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Women's Recap

Doubles

Jaida Borg and Mercedes Velasco took a 6-0 doubles win for the Purple Eagles in the second doubles position.

In third doubles, Enrica Favaron and Larisa Kotok secured the doubles point as they won in convincing fashion with a 6-1 win.

Singles

Elena Mayet was slotted in the first singles position. She fell in the opening set, 6-4. Mayet forced a third set and won 6-2 in the third set to win her first singles match of the season.

Coral Rodriguez dropped her first set in second singles but quickly responded in the second set. She took the second set 6-4. In the third set she fell 6-1.  

Borg notched a win in third singles in straight sets. She took the first set 6-2 and took the second set 6-0.

Kotok was in the fourth singles position in home debut. She took her first dual match win as she won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Favaron looked to go 2-0 on the day after winning in doubles. She was in the sixth singles position, she lost just one game as she won the first set 6-1 and 6-0 in the second set.

The women's team is back in action on Sunday as they host Le Moyne at the Niagara Tennis Courts with the match starting at 12 PM.
