Purple Eagles Split On Senior Day

Williamsville, N.Y.—The Niagara tennis teams closed out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday as they hosted Fairfield in a MAAC dual match. The Women's team fell 5-2 while the men came away with a 4-3 win.
Men's Recap
Doubles Singles
  • Masi was the first Purple Eagle to earn a point in third singles. He won the opening set 6-1 and earned the win with a 6-3 win in the second set.
  • Makkar notched the second Purple Eagle point as he won his fifth singles match in straight set 6-1, 6-1.
  • Playing in his final home match as a Purple Eagle, Alonso tied the match in fourth singles. After falling in his first set 7-6. He came back with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the third set he won 7-5 to tie the overall match at three.
  • It came down to Vaca's match in sixth singles. The junior won the opening set 6-3 but fell 6-2 in the second set. Vaca dominated the third set secured the win for Niagara as he won 6-1 in the third set.
Notes
  • Masi moves to 9-3 this season which is a team best. He is 8-2 in the third singles position. He is 4-0 in conference matches this season.
  • Makkar improves to 7-7 overall this season but hold a 4-0 MAAC record. He is 4-2 when playing in the sixth position.
  • Vaca picked up his first conference win and his third win of the season.
  • Alonso notched his sixth win of the season and his second MAAC win of the year.
  • Niagara is now 2-2 in MAAC play and sits in a three way tie for fourth place with Siena and Fairfield.
Women's Recap
Doubles Singles
  • In first singles Mayet picked a three set win. She fell in the first set 6-1 but bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second set. With a point on the line she won the third set 7-5.
  • Rodriguez picked up the second Purple Eagle point in a three set win as well. After falling 7-6 in the first set she rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second set. She dominated the third set and took the win with a 6-1 third set win.
  • In fourth singles Velasco, fell in three sets. She forced a third set after falling 7-5 in first set. In the second set she won 6-3.
Notes
  • Mayet picked up her fourth win of the season and first conference win. It is her third win the second position.
  • It is the third win for Rodriguez and first win in third singles. It is also her first MAAC win.
  • The Purple Eagles fall to 1-3 in MAAC play and are tied for fifth place in the MAAC.
Up Next
  • Both teams close out the regular season next weekend on the road. On Saturday, the Purple Eagles face Rider before closing the regular season out on Sunday against Siena.
