Purple Eagles Sweep Broncs

Lawrenceville, N.J.—The Niagara tennis teams kicked off the final weekend of the regular season against the Rider Broncs on the road. The men's team took a 6-1 win to improve to a 3-2 MAAC record with one match left. The women also took a 4-3 win to improve to 2-3 in MAAC play.
Men's Recap
Doubles Singles
  • Bedard carried the momentum into first singles as he won in straight sets. After taking the opening the set 6-4 he secured the win with a 6-4 win in the second set.
  • Bryce Bodak was slotted in third singles and took the win. In the first set of the match he won 7-6 in a tie breaker. He took the point as he won the second set 6-3 to secure the win and the point.
  • Jorge Sedeno took the win in fourth singles. He won the first set 6-4 and secured the point with a 6-2 win in the second set. With the win he secured the match win for Niagara.
  • Alonso also carried momentum into singled as he was slotted into fifth singles. He won his match in straight sets. He won both his sets 6-4 to earn the point.
  • In the final singles match Makkar forced three sets. After falling in the first set in a tie breaker he responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. In the third and final set he won 10-6 to secure the win and the point for Niagara.
Men's Notes
  • The men's team has not locked a spot up in the MAAC Championships as they sit at 3-2 and are in a four way tie for second. Niagara holds a tie breaker over Fairfield who finished their season 4-2 and are currently in first, and Rider who finishes the regular season at 3-3. Niagara earns a playoff spot with a win.
  • Makkar is currently on four match winning streak in singles.
  • Bedard moves to 4-1 in MAAC play and 10-6 overall this season.
  • Bodak picked up his first MAAC win of the season.
Women's Recap
Doubles Singles
  • Mayet took the momentum from doubles into her first singles match. She won the first set 6-2 and then secured the point with a 6-0 win.
  • Velasco also brought momentum from doubles into singles. She fell 6-2 in the first set and responded in the second set with a 6-3 win. In the third set, she secured the win and the point with a 6-3 win in fourth singles.
  • With the overall match tied at three Borg was locked in an intense match in fifth singles. She won the opening set in a tie breaker 7-6. Rider forced a third set and the two battled in the third set. Borg had the serve in the tiebreaking set and took the final game to secure the win and the win for the Purple Eagles.
Women's Notes
  • The Purple Eagles clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday against Siena.
  • Mayet picked up her fifth win of the season and second in MAAC play.
  • Velasco earned her sixth win of the season, it was her second MAAC win of the season. She is 3-1 this season when playing fourth singles.
  • Borg picked up her fifth win of the season and second in MAAC play.
