Big Second Inning Propels Purple Eagles In Home Opener

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team opened the home portion of its schedule on Thursday as they hosted Quinnipiac in a MAAC matchup. The Purple Eagles notched a 5-4 win to open the weekend series.
Game Recap
  • The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the second inning and took the 2-0 lead.
  • After allowing two runs in the top half of the Purple Eagles put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Vincent Mauro opened the inning by launching the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to cut the Bobcat lead in half. Max Giordano drew a walk but was caught stealing. With one out in the frame Josh Marchese drew a walk. On the first pitch he saw Kelly Corl hit his third homer of the season to give the Purple Eagles a 3-2 lead. Gavin Schrader was the next batter and drew a four pitch walk, he then advanced to second on a passed ball. Brady Desjardins stepped up and doubled down the right field line and drove Schrader home for the fourth Purple Eagle run. The lineup turned over and Nick Groves had a productive out as he grounded out to second and Desjardins moved over to third. In his second at-bat of the game, Matt Ward looped the first pitch he saw to left field and hustled but a double as he drove in the fifth Purple Eagle run.
  • In the top of the fourth, Quinnipiac drove in a pair of runs to make it a 5-4 game.
  • The next best scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth inning. The Bobcats had the bases loaded after a pair of hits and a walk. Zach Cameron came out of the bullpen and got a flyout to end the inning and keep the Purple Eagle lead.
  • Neither teams got another runner to third base in the last three innings with both teams each getting just one runner to second base the final three innings.
  • Nick Veselinovic started on the mound for the Purple Eagles and picked up his second win of the season. He went five innings while allowing four runs, just two were earned runs. He struckout four while inducing six flyouts and five groundouts.
Niagara Notes
  • Cameron picked up his fifth save of the season as he went 3.1 innings out of the pen. He allowed just one hit and struckout four batters. He produced three groundouts and three flyouts.
  • Mauro was the lone Purple Eagle with two hits, Ward, Marchese, Corl, and Desjardins each had one hit.
  • Corl drove in two runs while Mauro, Ward, and Desjardins each drove in one run.
  • With his hit on Thursday, Corl extended his hitting streak to 10. Mauro is now on a four game hitting streak.
  • The Purple Eagles are 1-0 at home, it is the first time since the 2021 season that Niagara has started 1-0 at home. In 2021, the Purple Eagles also defeated Quinnipiac. They went on to sweep the Bobcats.
