Purple Eagles Fall In Both Games Against George Mason

Fairfax, Va.—The Niagara baseball team opened its weekend against George Mason on Saturday, the Purple Eagles fell 15-2 in game one and 6-3 in game two.
Game One (L, 15-2)
  • Neither team scored in the first two innings, the Patriots opened the scoring in the third inning as they scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning. George Mason made it 3-0 on a double steal in the fourth inning. The Patriots made it a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning on a sac fly.
  • Niagara's offense generated two runs in the seventh inning. Brady Desjardins started the rally with a one walk, he then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nick Groves then stepped into the box and singled up the middle to drive in Desjardins.
  • After a pitching change, Cole O'Connor was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a popout, both runners advanced on another wild pitch. Josh Marchese then pulled one to right filed and drove in Groves for the second Niagara run.
  • In the bottom of the seven, George Mason pushed eight runs across on three hits. They added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
  • Niagara had six hits in the first game with Groves, O'Connor, Cole Tucker, Marchese, and Gavin Schrader all notching hits.
Game Two (L, 6-3)
  • The Purple Eagle offense got started early on. Groves opened the game with a hit but was caught stealing. Kelly Corl then notched a one out single to right field. After a strikeout, Marchese drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Max Giordano then singled up the middle to drive in Corl from second for the first run of the game.
  • Neither team scored again until the top of the fourth inning. Marchese crushed a high fastball over the right field wall for his first round tripper of the season.
  • George Mason got on the board as they scored on a double to left field.
  • The Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a hit and an error to take the 3-2 lead.
  • George Mason score twice in the bottom of the seven to make it 5-2.
  • The Purple Eagles clawed back in the top of the either. Marchese notched a one out walk and Giordano then doubled to left center. O'Connor then grounded out that brought Marchese home.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, George Mason pushed another run across to make it a three run game again. Niagara could not formulate a comeback.
  • Three different Purple Eagles had two hits as Groves, Corl, and Giordano all had two hits.
  • Nick Veselinovic started on the mound and went five innings while allowing two runs on six hits. He notched two strikeouts along with six grounds and five fly outs.
Niagara Notes
  • Giordano leads the team with a .389 batting average, he had seven hits this season with four being extra base hits. He also has a team high eight RBI.
  • Corl is hitting .308 in his first season with the Purple Eagles.
Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles and Patriots are back in action tomorrow with another doubleheader. Game one starts at 10:30 AM and will be nine innings. Game two will start about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game and is scheduled to be seven innings.
