Niagara Picks Up 18-11 Win Over YSU

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara outscored YSU 9-2 in the second half to earn a 18-11 win over the Penguins Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action from Niagara Field.
 
Rachel Crane, Andra Savage, and Lois Garlow each scored four goals, while Garlow added three assists to lead NU with seven points. Emma Mielke came into the contest during the first quarter making five saves.
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• YSU took a 3-0 lead six and a half minutes into the contest before Peck found Savage for Niagara's first tally of the contest.
• The Penguins added two more to take a 5-1 lead over NU with five minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
• Savage would once again stop the bleeding for Niagara, making it a 5-2 game and sparking a 4-0 run for NU.
• The Purple Eagles closed the quarter with goals from Jenna Brill, Crane and Savage to tie the game at 5-5.
 
Second Quarter
• Garlow took a feed from Jaclyn Crane less than a minute into the second quarter to give Niagara its first lead of the contest, 6-5.
• The Purple Eagles and Penguins and would trade goals over the next five minutes, giving the Purple Eagles an 8-7 lead.
• Consecutive goals put YSU back on top, 9-8, with 5:09 to play in the first half.
• Garlow would tie the contest at 9-9 with 3:58 left in the half after Kendall Schneider found the senior with the pass.
 
Third Quarter
• NU would score back-to-back goals to start the second half, taking an 11-9 lead. Crane scored the first, followed by Giordan Peck's first career tally.
• After YSU scored one to make it an 11-10 contest, Crane, Brill, and Braniecki gave the Purple and White a 14-10 advantage heading into the final contest.
 
Fourth Quarter
• Niagara made it a 15-10 game with a goal from Braniecki to start the fourth.
• YSU would score its final goal of the contest to make it 15-11 with 12:09 to play in the contest.
• The Purple Eagles tallied three goals in the final seven minutes of action to give the game its 18-11 final.
• Crane, Latray, and Garlow each found the back of the net for Niagara in the final period.
 
Niagara Notes
• Niagara improves to 2-0 all-time against Youngstown State.
• The last time Niagara started 4-1 through five games was in 2006.
• Niagara recorded 18 goals for the second time this season and first time at home since Feb. 20, 2017.
• Garlow tallied four goals for the third time this season, while setting a season-high with seven points.
• Crane and Savage also matched their season-highs with four goals.
• Brill scored twice for the first time this season.
• Niagara tallied nine assists, led by three from Garlow, a season-high. Riley Latray tallied two.
• NU finished 17-for-18 on clear attempts and won 18 draw controls. Braniecki and Crane led NU with five apiece, while Peck and Schneider tallied three.
Mickey Knapp finished the game with a team-best four caused turnovers. Peck added three.
• Four Purple Eagles finished with three or more ground balls, led by Knapp with five.
