Purple Eagles Fly Into MAAC Play With Win Over Colonials

Washington, D.C.—The Niagara baseball team closed out its final non-conference weekend with a 4-2 win over George Washington.

  • The Colonials once again jumped out to an early lead as they scored in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Neither team generated another run until the fifth inning, George Washington homered to make it a 2-0 game after five complete innings.
  • Niagara responded in the top of the sixth inning as Max Giordano opened the frame with his MAAC leading seventh homer to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • The Purple Eagles offense went back to work in the top of the seventh as Nick Groves started the inning with a single to right center. Matt Ward then drew a five pitch walk. After a fielder's choice, Niagara had runners on the corners with one out. Cole Tucker then ripped a 0-1 pitch to center field to drive in Groves to tie the game. Just four pitches later, Giordano double down the right field line to drive in the go-ahead run.
  • With the Purple Eagles leading by one, they made it a two run game in the top of the ninth. Gavin Schrader opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Giordano was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. Vincent Mauro stepped in and singled up the middle to drive in Schrader for the fourth Purple Eagle run.
  • Zach Cameron worked around two hits in the bottom of the ninth to secure the Purple Eagle win.
Niagara Notes
  • Blake MacMillian started on the mound and went four innings while allowing one run on four hits while notching two strikeouts.
  • Brady Kobitowich came out of the pen and went two innings while having two strikeouts and allowing just one run. He earned his second win of the season in his fifth appearance.
  • Cameron went three innings to close out the game and did not allow a run despite giving up four hits. He notched his fourth save of the season while having four strikeouts. This season in 16.1 innings he had 20 strikeouts along with a 2.76 ERA, opponents are hitting .258 against the him this season.
  • The Purple Eagles had 11 hits in the win, they have double digit hits in seven games this season. In those games they are 5-2 this season.
  • Six Purple Eagles had hits in the game with Schrader leading the way with three hits. Groves, Giordano, and Muaro all had two hits while Tucker and Kelly Corl both had a hit.
  • Niagara had a season high three doubles, with Schrader, Giordano and Mauro all notching two baggers.
  • Three Purple Eagles are hitting over .300 this season with Giordano leading the way with a .385 average. Groves is hitting .321 out of the leadoff spot while Ward is hitting .302 for Niagara.
  • The Purple Eagles won both of the three game series they have played in to open the season.
  • Niagara is one of just three teams in the MAAC who are over .500 as they enter MAAC play.
  • The Purple Eagles are 8-7 and will enter MAAC play over .500 for the first time since the 2017 season when they were 9-7 before opening MAAC play.
