Niagara Closes Out West Coast Trip With Win Over Oregon

Eugene, OR—The Niagara baseball team closed out its west coast road trip with a non-conference win over Pac-12 foe Oregon, the Purple Eagles won 8-5.
Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles opened the scoring early in the game. Nick Groves singled on the first pitch of the game and then moved up to third on back-to-back wild pitches. On a 3-1 pitch Matt Ward drove one to right field that brought Groves home on the SAC fly to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Vincent Mauro opened the second inning with a double to left center. Kelly Corl then laid down a bunt that he beat out to put runners on the corners. Brady Dejardins then drew a walk to load the bases. Groves then drew a six pitch walk to drive in a run. Ward gave the Purple Eagles the 3-0 lead with his second SAC fly of the game.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Oregon got on the board as they scored one run on one hit. The Ducks made it a 3-2 game in the fourth as they hit a solo home run.
  • Niagara responded in the top of the fifth as Cole Tucker was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After an out and a walk, there were runners on first and second for Mauro. On a 1-0 pitch, Mauro lined a pitch to center field that that got by the slide Duck, both runners came around to score and Mauro had his first triple of the season. The Purple Eagles led 5-3 after five as Oregon could not respond.
  • The top of the six opened with a Groves single on a 2-2 pitch which was followed by a Ward single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Gavin Schrader then drew a five pitch walk to lead the bases. After a double play, Cole O'Connor singled up the middle to drive in two runs and made it a 7-3 lead.
  • The Ducks responded in the bottom of the seventh as they scored twice on four hits. Zach Cameron limited the damage as he got a groundout to ended the inning with the bases loaded.
  • Niagara responded in the top of the eighth as Schrader had a one out double. Tucker then drew a five pitch walk which was followed by a Max Giordano walk to load the bases. Schrader then scored on a wild pitch to give the Purple Eagles three run lead once again.
  • Oregon doubled in the bottom of the eighth but Cameron worked out of the jam with back to back groundouts.
  • In the ninth, Cameron secured the Purple Eagle win with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.
Niagara Notes
  • Groves has now opened the game by getting on base in six straight games. He has four walks and two hits. This season he is hitting .304 with 14 walks and 14 hits in 12 games. He also has a team high four steals and 12 runs scored.
  • Niagara drew a season high nine walks in the game with Tucker, Giordano, and O'Connor all walking twice.
  • Four different players drove in runs with O'Connor, Ward, and Mauro all driving in two, Groves drove in a run as well.
  • Six Purple Eagles had a hit while, Mauro, Groves, and Schrader all had two. O'Connor, Ward, and Corl all each had a hit.
  • Nick Veslinovic started on the mound and went 2.1 innings while allowing two runs on two hits, he also had one strikeout.
  • Hospital moved to 2-2 on the season as he picked up the win after going 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed two runs on five hits while notching a pair of strikeouts.
  • Cameron earned his third save of the season as he went three innings while allowing just a run on four hits. He had three strikeouts.
  • Niagara last beat a Power Five team in the 2020 season when they defeated No. 14 Florida State to open the season.
  • It is the first time in program history that Niagara has beaten a team from the Pac-12.

  • The Purple Eagles travel back east to start its final non-conference weekend series against George Washington on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM in Washington, D.C.
