Purple Eagles Fall In AHA Semifinals

Buffalo, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team fell to Canisius in the third game of the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals on Sunday night. The Purple Eagles fell 4-2 to the Griffs.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The Purple Eagles opened the scoring just 4:08 into the game as Glebs Prohorenkovs scored his 12th goal of the season. Casey Carreau played the puck behind the net to Albin Nilsson who threw a quick pass to Prohorenkovs in front of the net, Prohorenkovs one-timed it into the net for the first goal of the game.
  • The Griffs got on the board at the 15:16 mark of the first period and the teams went to the locker room tied at one.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot the Griffs 10-6 in the first period while Niagara blocked five shots.
Second Period
  • Canisius took the lead just under four minutes into the second period.
  • At the 18:25 mark of the frame, the Griffs took a hooking penalty to give Niagara their third power play of the game. At the 19:09 mark of the period, Albin Nilsson took a one timer from the right circle and scored his 10th goal of the season. Ryan Naumovski and Casey Carreau picked up their 17th and 21st assists of the season.
  • Niagara blocked another five shots in the period, Canisius outshot Niagara 13-10 in the second period.
Third Period
  • The Griffs scored the eventual game winning goal at the 4:39 mark of the third period and added an insurance goal on the power play at the 10:33 mark.
  • The Purple Eagles generated nine shots in the period but could not convert.
Niagara Notes
  • Chad Veltri made 26 saves in his 99th career game as a Purple Eagle.
  • Ryan Cox skated in 152nd career game as a Purple Eagle, he finishes his career with the second most games played in program history.
  • Nilsson tallied a goal and an assist and notched career points 50 and 51 in the game.
  • Jordan Wishman had a blocked shot in his 129th career game and final game as a Purple Eagle.
  • The Purple Eagles finished the season with a 19-18-3 record, it is the programs first winning season since the 2012-13 season. It is the 14th winning season in program history.
