Purple Eagles Drop Game Two Of AHA Semis

Buffalo, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team fell in the second game of a best of three series against Canisius in the AHA Semifinals by a score of 5-1 on Saturday night.
Game Recap
First Period
  • In the opening period the Griffs outshot the Purple Eagles 10-8.
  • At the 8:03 mark of the first period, the Griffs opened the scoring as the puck was redirected in front of the net.
  • While on the power play, the Griffs made it a 2-0 lead at the 18:19 mark of the frame.
  • In the faceoff circle the Purple Eagles won nine of 16 draws. Ryan Cox led the way with a 5-2 record while Jason Pineo was 3-1 in the circle.
Second Period
  • In the second period, the Purple Eagles notched 11 shots while allowing just five shots.
  • At the 8:09 mark of the second period on their first shot of the period, the Griffs made it a three goal lead.
  • With the teams playing 4v4 at the 15:35 mark of the period, Niagara got on the board. Jason Pineo won the face off deep in the Canisius zone and Olivier Gauthier found the loose puck and put the puck into the corner of the net with a backhanded shot.
  • Niagara once again controlled the faceoff circle as they won nine of 16 draws once again.
Third Period
  • The third period was a chippy period as the physical play picked up. Neither team scored until the Purple Eagles pulled goalie Chad Veltri for the extra skater at the five minute mark. The Griffs scored twice on the empty net.
  • Both teams had a power play in the period and neither were able to convert with Niagara having one shot on the man advantage.
Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles went 25-23 in the faceoff circle with Cox leading the way at 9-6.
  • Veltri made 22 saves on 25 shots.
  • Niagara had 26 shots in the game with Cox and Josef Mysak both having a team high four. 16 different Purple Eagles had shots on goal in the game.
  • The last time the two teams met in the playoffs in 2018-19 the Purple Eagles took game one and Canisius took game two. In the third game Niagara won 2-1 to advance.
  • In their last seven elimination games dating back to the 2020-21 season the Purple Eagles are 5-2.
