Purple Eagles Earn Point In Tie With Army

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team was back in action on Saturday night as they hosted Army for the back half of an Atlantic Hockey weekend. After regulation ended 3-3 the teams skated to a 3-3 tie with Army taking the bonus point in the shootout.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The game opened with the Purple Eagles controlling play for the opening five minutes which included the Purple Eagles outshooting Army 5-0. Overall in the period, Niagara registered nine shots while allowing four shots to Army.
  • Despite the shot advantage, the first period ended how it started, scoreless.
  • Niagara had 12 blocks in the first period as Carter Randklev had three blocked shots in the open 20 minutes.
  • Faceoffs were just about even in the first as Niagara won 10 of 21 draws. Glebs Prohorenkovs had a game high five wins in the first period.
Second Period
  • The second period opened with the two teams playing a back-and-forth game for the first 10 minutes.
  • At the 10:26 mark, Albin Nilsson scored his eighth goal of the year on the power play. Josef Mysak skated down the side wall with the puck and passed it Prohorenkovs who one touch passed it to Nilsson. For Mysak it was his 11th assist of the season while Prohorenkovs picked up his third assist.
  • Just over a minute later at the 11:36 mark of the period, the Purple Eagles struck again. Noah Carlin kept the puck in the blue line and sent around the boards to behind the net. Shane Ott picked up the puck and slung it to across the ice to Jonathan Ziskie who snuck low into the zone. The freshman made no mistake and ripped his first career goal into the corner of the net. For Ott it was his team leading 15th assist of the season. It was Carlin's ninth assist of the season.
  • Army scored at the 16:54 mark of the period to cut the Niagara lead in half.
  • Niagara responded less than two minutes later at the 18:26 mark. The duo of Ryan Naumovski and Nilsson crossed as they entered the Army zone. Nilsson carried the puck behind the net and Naumovski went to the side of the net. Nilsson drew both defenders behind the net, he fed it to Naumovski who found Prohorenkovs cutting to the back side. He found Prohorenkovs with a diving pass and Prohorenkovs finished the play for his seventh of the season.
  • Niagara held a 3-1 lead despite being outshot 13-7 in the second period.
Third Period
  • The two teams traded chances early in the third period but neither team found the net in the first half of the period.
  • At the 12:12 mark of the third period, the Purple Eagles couldn't clear their zone and Army made it a one goal game once again.
  • With the Army net empty for the final 90 seconds, the Purple Eagles look to close out the game. However, following a Niagara icing the Black Knights won an offensive zone faceoff and scored right off the draw to make it a tie game with 13 seconds left.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot Army 11-7 in the third and 27-24 in regulation but the game was heading to overtime for the second straight night.
Overtime
  • Niagara tallied five shots in the overtime period along with a break-a-way opportunity but could not find the back of the net.
  • Chad Veltri turned away the one lone shot that he faced in the extra session and the game went to a shootout for the extra point.
Shootout
  • Army scored in the first round after Ott was stopped to opening the shootout.
  • Neither team could convert in the second and third rounds and the Black Knights took the extra point.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara went 1-3 on the power play on the night while generating five shots on the man advantage. The Black Knights went 0-2 on the power play and did not generate a shot.
  • The Purple Eagles had 32 shots on goal in the game, it is the fifth straight game in which they have tallied 30 or more shots. They have had 30 or more shots in 12 games this season.
  • Niagara blocked 18 shots in the game with Lucas Bahn leading the way with four, 11 different players blocked a shot.
  • Ziskie's goal was the first of his career, he joins Prohorenkovs, Jay Ahearn, and Carlin to score their first collegiate goals this season with the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara is 1-2-2 this season in overtime games.
  • Prohorenkovs went 14-9 in the faceoff dot while the Purple Eagles went 37-38.
  • Veltri made 22 saves in the tie and now has a 12-10-3 record, he has a 2.90 goals against average and a .904 save percentage this season.
  • The Purple Eagles have five players with double digit assists this season, Ott leads the way with 15 while Carreau has 14, Mysak 11, and Cox and Nilsson each have 10.

  • Niagara plays host to RIT who is currently ranked 18th in the country at Dwyer Arena on Thursday Feb. 9 and Saturday Feb. 11. Both games are set to start at 7:05 PM.
