Hockey Falls In Overtime To Army to Open Homestand

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team returned to Dwyer Arena to host cross state rival Army in a crucial  Atlantic Hockey weekend series. In the opening game of the weekend, the Purple Eagles fell to Army 3-2 in overtime.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The opening period was a feeling out process in which both teams landed a couple big hits in a scoreless period.
  • Despite the 0-0 score both goalies were tested as there was a combined 19 shots. Niagara peppered the Army netminder with nine shots while Niagara goalie Chad Veltri turned away all 10 Black Knight shots.
  • Niagara went 9-8 in the faceoff dot with Glebs Prohorenkovs having a game high four wins and winning four of six draws.
  • Both teams had a power play in the period and both teams registered one shot as they failed to convert on the man advantage.
Second Period
  • After feeling each other out in the opening period, both teams struck in the second period.
  • At the 8:06 mark of the period, Niagara struck first while the teams we're playing four on four. Noah Carlin passed the puck back to Josef Mysak who was deep in his own zone. Mysak beat a forechecker and was off to the races. He passed it to Jason Pineo who had speed up the wall and carried the puck into the zone. He then passed it Mysak who was driving to the net, Mysak powered it into the net for his third of the season and third in the last four games. For both Pineo and Carlin it was their eighth assist of the season.
  • With both teams back at five on five, Army scored at the 16:27 mark on a quick pass from behind the net.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot the Black Knights 10-7 in the period and held a 19-17 advantage in the game.
Third Period
  • Army took a penalty at the end of the second period, so the Purple Eagles started the period on the power play. Just 1:54 into the period, the Purple Eagles took a 2-1 lead. Christian Gorscak dug the puck out of the corner. Olivier Gauthier had the puck on his stick and fed it to Ryan Naumovski on the backdoor for his sixth of the season and 20th of his career.
  • Army tied the game at the 11:24 mark of the third period.
  • The two teams could not convert in the rest of the third period and teams went to overtime.
  • In the third period both teams went 1-3 on the power play while Niagara had five shots and Army three.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot the Black Knights 16-10 in the third period and had a 35-27 shot advantage through 60 minutes.
Overtime
  • Army scored the game winning goal just 34 seconds into the frame. It was the lone shot in the extra period.
Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles had 35 shots on goal, it is the fourth time this season they have registered 35 or more shots. They have had 30 or more shots in 11 games this season.
  • Both teams took six penalties in the game and both teams were 1-6 on the man advantage. Niagara produced six shots on the man advantage while limiting Army to four.
  • Casey Carreau had a game high six shots on net while Albin Nilsson and Mysak both had five in the game.
  • The Purple Eagles won 34 of 64 draws on the night with Ryan Cox having 10 wins and a 55.6 winning percentage. Prohorenkovs ended the night with a 9-3 record, he has won 154 draws this season and has a 56.6 faceoff percentage.
  • Niagara is now 1-2-1 in overtime games this season.
