Niagara Generates 51 Shots In Loss To RMU

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara hockey team fell 3-1 in its final game of the first semester to the Robert Morris Colonials at Dwyer Arena on Saturday night.

First Period

Robert Morris opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period.

Despite going into the locker room down 1-0, Niagara outshot the Colonials 14-8 in the opening period.

Niagara went 14-9 in the faceoff circle in the opening period.

Second Period

The second period saw no goals but had a combined 26 shots. Niagara outshot the Colonials 16-10 in the second period.

Niagara limited the Colonials to just one shot on their lone power play in the period.

The Purple Eagles once again won the faceoff battle in the second period as they won 10 of the 18 faceoffs.

Third Period

Niagara entered the third period trailing despite outshooting Robert Morris 30-18 in the first two periods.

Just over five minutes into the third period at the 5:23 mark, Niagara tied the game at one. Tyler Wallace found Noah Carlin at the left point and fired a pass from the right offensive corner. Carlin took a low shot through traffic; the puck was saved but Connor Mylymok swooped into the slot and fired the rebound home for his second goal of the season.

Robert Morris took their lead back at the 10:33 mark of the third while on the power play.

The Colonials closed out the game with just under three minutes left with an empty netter.

The Purple Eagles outshot Robert Morris 21-11 in the third period.

Niagara Notes

·       Niagara tallied 51 shots in the game as they outshot Robert Morris 51-29. The 51 shots is the first 50+ shot outing since Nov. 20, 2015 against AIC.

·       Ryan Ouellette made 25 saves in his eighth start of the season. He ends the first semester with a goals against average of 2.75 and a goals against average of .904.

·       Niagara generated 11 shots on the power play while limiting Robert Morris to just five.

·       The Purple Eagles dominated the faceoff dot as they went 42-23 in dot for a 64.6 winning percentage.

·       Glebs Prohorenkovs won 16 of 27 faceoffs while Wallace went 14-4 for a 77.8 winning percentage.

·       Prior to the game, Niagara welcomed back their 2003-04 CHA Championship team for their 20 year anniversary.

Up Next

Niagara now has 20 days off for the holiday break before hosting Miami (OH) on Dec. 29 and 30 at Dwyer Arena. Niagara then travels to Denver to take on the Pioneers on Jan. 5-6 before going back into Atlantic Hockey play with games against RIT and Mercyhurst on Jan. 11 and 13.
