Moon Township, Pa.—The Niagara hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Robert Morris on Saturday night as they defeated the Colonials 4-1 on the back half of a home and home series.
First Period
The first period was a back and forth even period as there were just 13 combined shots with Robert Morris holding a slight 7-6 advantage.
At the 15:11 mark of the opening period, Robert Morris scored to make it 1-0.
Niagara went on the penalty kill late in the period, they looked to kill of the penalty and keep it a one goal game. However, with less than a minute remaining in the period while down a man, Tyler Wallace picked up a loose puck deep in the Niagara zone. Wallace used his speed to create a two on one going into the RMU zone. Wallace took the shot and beat the Robert Morris netminder for his second goal in as many games. It was Niagara's second shorthanded goal in the last two games.
The Purple Eagles allowed just 13 shot attempts in the first period while they blocked three.
Second Period
The Purple Eagles took the lead at the 9:32 mark of the second period as Noah Hackett scored his first collegiate goal. Alex Murray picked up loose puck in the high slot and skated to his left and fired a shot towards the net, the first shot was saved but Hackett found the puck in mid-air and directed into the net for the Purple Eagles' second goal. Connor Mylymok picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
Niagara extended their lead at the 17:06 mark of the period while on the power play. Jay Ahearn won a battle along the half wall in the RMU zone and fed the puck to Shane Ott. Ott found Carter Randklev cutting to the net, Randklev one touch passed it to Glebs Prohorenkovs who was open on the back door, Prohorenkovs make no mistake and finished for his third goal of the season.
After 40 minutes, Niagara outshot Robert Morris 14-11 while leading 3-1.
Niagara was 2-2 on the penalty kill in the first two periods while allowing just one shot.
Third Period
Robert Morris came out of the gates firing in the third period as they were down 3-1, they outshot the Purple Eagles 14-4 but could not beat Jarrett Fiske in net.
Niagara iced the game with 34 seconds left as Jack Richard picked up a loose puck out of the penalty box and fired it into the empty net for his first collegiate goal.
The Purple and White killed off two Robert Morris power plays in the third period as they allowed just four shots with one of the power plays being a 6v4 situation.
Niagara Notes
· Fiske made 24 saves in the win, he improves to 3-2-0 this season with a 2.82 goals against average this season.
· Niagara blocked 11 shots in the win with Lane Brockhoff blocking a game high three shots. Noah Carlin and Josef Mysak both blocked two shots.
· Richard and Hackett scored their first collegiate goals, they join Wallace, Drew Vieten, and Johnny Wescoe who scored their first collegiate goals this weekend.
· Prohorenkovs has scored three goals in his last four games.
· Niagara has won four straight games against Robert Morris. They are 37-29-10 all-time against Robert Morris.
· Murray, Randklev, and Wallace all had three-point weekends while Murray and Wallace both had +4 ratings.
· Carlin finished the weekend with a +5 rating as he was credited with an assist on Saturday while also netted a goal on Friday night.
· Niagara outshot Robert Morris 60-49 in the two-game series.
· 14 Purple Eagles had points on the weekend with eight having multiple points.
· Murray is riding a four-game point streak as he has five assists in four games.
· With the win, Niagara head coach Jason Lammers picked up his 100th NCAA win, 81 of them have came at Niagara.
