EMMITSBURG, MD – Niagara (2-9-1, 1-2-1 MAAC) was defeated by Mount St. Mary's (4-6-3, 2-2-1 MAAC) 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in MAAC women's soccer action on the road.
How it Happened
Niagara had a few chances to find the back of the net early, but attempts from
Emma Bough,
Katie Diem and
Amanda Cripps were thwarted by the Mount goalie and back line.
Following a save by
Agnes Stenlund, the Mount was able to beat the sophomore keeper for the first goal of the contest with 15-minutes remaining in the first half.
The Purple Eagles wouldn't get a chance in the final 10-minutes of the first half, going into the break down by one.
Niagara would go on the offensive to start the second with
Isabella Mazzaferro finding
Emily Hähnel inside the 18-yard box, however, the ball would get away from the fifth-year before she could take a shot on goal.
Bough would get the first official shot of the second half for NU, but her attempt was off target.
Chloe Hubbard would send a cross into the box in the 51st minute, looking for Hähnel on the far side, but the Mount goalie would intercept the pass to keep NU off the board. The freshman would once again send a pass into the box, this time to Mazzaferro but the freshman couldn't get a clean look before the Mountaineer goalie secured the ball.
In the 59th minute of action, Dejaynaba Thiam would head a pass from
Trinity Meinhart toward the goal as Niagara continued to try and find the equalizer, but The Mount keeper was there to make the save.
A corner kick in the 67th minute would find the knee of a Mountaineer and find the back of the net, giving Mount St. Mary's a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
The Mount would outshoot Niagara 4-0 over the final 15 minutes of action as it looked for its third goal of the contest. Stenlund would make a pair of saves as Mount St. Mary's road out the final minutes en route to a 2-0 win over the Purple Eagles.
