Poughkeepsie, N.Y.—The Niagara volleyball team could not compete the season sweep of Marist on Saturday as they fell in four sets to the Red Foxes.
First Set
Marist took the early 4-0 lead and led for the whole set. Niagara worked back throughout the set and the set and was a one point difference as it was 13-12. That would be the closest the Purple Eagles would get in the set as they eventually fell 25-20 in the opening set.
Lexi Bapst had five kills in the first set to lead the team. Jenna Vogen had two whole Janiah Robinson, Cassie Seminoff, and Payton Lee all had one kill. Niagara had two blocks in the first set as Bapst and Robinson teamed up for a block twice. Casey Brown led the team with four assists while Kylie Blessing led the team with six digs.
Second Set
The second set was much more back and forth as there were three lead changes and five times that the score was tied. The two teams traded points early in the set until it was 8-8 through 16 points in the set. After the tie, Marist took the lead and never let it go as they took the second set by a score of 25-19.
Bapst once again led in the kill department in the second set as she had four to lead the team. Both Laryssa Imbuzeiro and Seminoff had two kills in the set while Vogen had one. The Purple Eagles once again had two blocks as Lee, Seminoff, Imbuzeiro, and Robinson all had a block assist. Blessing led the team with five assists while Brown had three. Seminoff, Bapst, and Vogen all had a team high three digs in the set.
Third Set
Just like the second set, the team traded points early in the set as there were three lead changes and four tied scores in the set. Marist held a lead for majority of the of set until the Purple Eagles worked back later in the set and tied the set at 23. After an attack error to make it 24-23 Niagara, Bapst earned the set win for Niagara with a kill.
Niagara had 11 kills in the set with six different Purple Eagles registering a kill. Imbuzeiro and Robinson had a team high three in the set while Bapst had two, Vogen, Seminoff, and Lee all had one kill in the set. The Purple Eagles had six blocks in the set with Imbuzeiro leading the way with four block assists. Vogen had three block assists while Robinson and Bapst had two, Seminoff added one block assist.
Fourth Set
Marist controlled the fourth set as there was just one tied score and that was when the set was tied at one. Niagara could not generate momentum throughout the set as they fell 25-17 to the Red Foxes.
Both Bapst and Seminoff had three kills in the set while Imbuzeiro had the other kill for the Purple Eagles. Both Brown and Blessing had three assists. Niagara had three blocks in the set with Lee having three block assists, she teamed up with Robinson twice and Imbuzeiro once in the set.
Niagara Notes
· Niagara had 13 blocks in the match, they have had seven matches this season with 10 or more blocks in a match.
· Bapst had 14 kills along with 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. She has double digit kills in nine matches this season.
· Niagara is fourth in the MAAC standings this season as they are 8-5 in MAAC play with five matches left in the regular season.
