Bonnies Squeeze Past Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – With the game tied 1-1 in the 87th minute, St. Bonaventure's Matthew Wrobel scored the game-winner to send Bona home with a 2-1 win over the Purple Eagles. Niagara drops to 1-6-1 overall, while the Bonnies improve to 3-4-1.
 
 Game Recap
 First Half
• The Bonnies took the first four shots of the contest, with Josh Savoni making one save during that stretch.  
• Niagara's first shot would come off the foot of Gabriel Mikina in the 12th minute of play.
• Mikina would end up taking two more shots over the next 10-minutes of play, but both chances missed high.
• Savoni would make two more stops in the 27th and 20th minute of play.
• Bonaventure struck first as Umechi Akuazazoku found the back of the net in the 39th minute after receiving a pass from Dean Mercer.
 
 Second Half
Rodrigo Almeida would tie things with his head in the 52nd minute. The striker received the cross from Cameron Roach and snuck it past the post for the equalizer.
• Landon Hangerford put a shot on goal in the 54th minute that nearly gave NU a 2-1 lead, but the Bona keeper Nicolas Pucci.
• Savoni would make another save in the 59th minute, keeping the game tied.
• In the 74th minute of action, the Purple Eagles put a golden opportunity on net but the Bonnie back was their for the team save.
• The Bonnies would take advantage of a defensive miscue by the Purple Eagles in the 87th minute when Worbel found the back of the net for the game winner.  
 
 Niagara Notes
• Savoni made a total of seven saves in the contest, a season-high for the goalie.
•  Almeida's goal in the 52nd minute was his fourth of the season 15th of his career.
• Wednesday was the first loss Niagara has suffered at the hands of the Bonnies since 2018.
 
 Up Next
 • Niagara will begin league play on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when it hosts Battle of the Bridge Rival Canisius at Niagara Field. Kickoff between the Purple Eagles and Griffs is set for 7 p.m.
