Niagara Defeated by UMBC

BALTIMORE, MD. – Niagara would battle in a four-set match with UMBC, but the Retrievers came out on top 3-1 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. 
 
Match Recap: 
First Set
• Niagara would double up UMBC early in the first set as back-to-back kills from Kinga Wronska gave NU a 6-3 lead. 
• The Retrievers would outscore the Purple Eagles 10-3, leading to a 13-9 lead and an NU timeout. 
• A heads-up play by Kylie Blessing ended the UMBC run. 
• UMBC would go on to take the set, 25-16. 
 
Set 2
• The Purple Eagles would jump out to an 11-7 lead before UMBC called a timeout. 
• Niagara's lead would grow to a match-high five points at 17-12. 
• UMBC would pull within three, 18-15, after taking three of the following four points. 
Lexi Bapst would keep NU up by four with a kill to make the score 19-15. 
• NU would be the first team to 20 points, taking a 20-16 advantage after a kill by Wronska. 
• Back-to-back points by UMBC pulled the Retrievers within two, forcing NU to call a timeout. 
Laryssa Imbuzeiro would make it a 22-18 game in favor of the Purple and White with a big-time block in the middle. 
• Niagara would stave off a late UMBC run to take the set 25-23. 
 
Set 3
• Despite taking the first point of the third set, UMBC would take a 6-1 advantage early on. 
• A 5-2 run would put Niagara down by two, 8-6. 
• A few points later, Imbuzeiro collected another solo block to put NU down by one, 9-8. 
• UMBC would go on a 7-2 run to take a 10-6 advantage over NU. 
• The Retrievers would go on to win the set 25-12.
 
Set 4
• Niagara would take a 4-3 lead on a kill by Vogen.
• That lead would grow to 8-5 after a 5-2 run by the Purple Eagles. 
• UMBC would tie the set at 10-10 following a 5-3 swing for the Retrievers. 
• The Retrievers would extend the run to 10-5 to take a 15-12 lead over NU. 
• Niagara would call timeout with the score 21-17 in favor of UMBC. 
• Three straight points for NU following the timeout, highlighted by a kill from Taylor Allen, put NU down 21-20. 
• Despite the pressure from NU, UMBC would take the set 25-22. 
 
Niagara Notes
• Niagara's 12 block assists are second most for a match this season. Allen had a team-high three blocks, her third match this season with three or more. 
• Wronska led NU with 11 kills, her third match this season with double-digit kills. 
Casey Brown recorded her sixth match with double-digit assists with a team-best 19. 
• NU finished the four-set match with a .230 hitting percentage, with Wronska leading the team at .360 percent.
