Early Goal Lifts Bona Over Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Despite multiple chances, the Niagara women's soccer program was edged 1-0 by St. Bonaventure Thursday night in non-conference women's soccer action.
 
Game Recap
First Half
• The Bonnies struck first on a corner kick that was headed in by Bridget Kennedy in the eighth minute of action.
• The Purple Eagles followed that with a pair of chances in the next two minutes, both of which were saved by the Bona keeper Chiara Gottinger.
• Transfer Amanda Cripps nearly made it a 1-1 game with her attempt in the 32nd minute but Gottinger made the save.
• Cripps had another chance get stopped by the Bona goalie in the 38th minute.
 
Second Half
• The 54th minute saw Djeynaba Thiam just put one high of the net, keeping the score at 1-0.
• Freshman goalie Agnes Stenlund made a diving stop in the 63rd minute of play to keep Niagara within one.
• Thiam once again put a shot on goal that was thwarted by Bona's goalie, this one in in the 67th minute of action.
Emma Bough put three shots toward goal during a 10-minute stretch but couldn't beat the keeper.
• Late in the contest, Emma Davies drew a foul in the box leading to a penalty kick by Cripps that went off the crossbar, keeping the game at 1-0 in favor of the Bonnies.
• A last second corner sent in by Maia MacLean found the head of Bough, but the attempt went wide.
 
Niagara Notes
Niagara took a total of 23 shots in the contest, with Bough taking a team-high seven.
• Of NU's 23 shots, 13 were on target, including four from Davies.
• For the second straight game, Felicia Grufman and Agnes Stenlund split time in goal for the Purple Eagles.
 
Up Next
• Niagara will head to Annapolis, Md., for a Sunday afternoon tilt against Navy. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
