NU Defeats Marist, Advances To MAAC Semifinals

POMONA, N.Y. – The No. 6 Purple Eagles (21-31, 13-11) earned a come-from-behind victory over No. 2 Marist (29-17, 17-5 MAAC) on Thursday, defeating the Red Foxes 7-4 to eliminate them from the MAAC Tournament and advance to the semifinals. 

Niagara has won two of its three games played so far in the MAAC Tournament, marking the first time the Purple Eagles have won more than one tournament game since 2005, whey they advanced to the championship game.

Game Recap
  • The Red Foxes took a 4-0 lead over the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the second inning.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Spencer Marcus singled to center field, plating Max Giordano to leave Niagara trailing by three, 4-1.
  • Niagara's bats came alive in the fifth inning. Cole O'Connor singled up the middle, scoring Dawson Bailey to cut the Marist lead in half, 4-2. A two-RBI double from Benny Serrano tied the ball game at 4-4. Matt Ward put the Purple Eagles in the lead, 5-4, singling to left field to score Serrano.
  • In the top of the sixth frame, a sacrifice fly from Josh Marchese scored Bailey and extended the NU lead, 6-4.
  • Matt Ward added the final run of the game for the Purple Eagles, scoring on a Marist error in the top of the seventh to put NU ahead, 7-4.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bailey led the Purple Eagles at the plate, going 4-for-5.
  • O'Connor had three hits and Serrano, Matt Ward and Marcus each had two hits.
  • Serrano led the team in RBIs with two.
  • Bailey and Giordano each scored two runs.
  • Tommy Bednarski (1-1) earned the win on the mound. He struck out two and did not give up any hits in 1.0 inning pitched.
  • Ben Erwin struck out three in 2.0 innings of relief and Kyle Smyth earned the save, fanning three in 1.0 inning of work.
