Niagara Defeated by Manhattan in MAAC Quarterfinal

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Niagara women's lacrosse team had its season end Saturday afternoon on Monteagle Ridge after Manhattan worked its way back to a 16-15 overtime win in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship. 

Lois Garlow scored six times, followed by two apiece from Allison McCormick, Lexi Braniecki, Lucy Rugaber, and Andra Savage. Michelle Messenger made 15 saves in the cage for the Purple Eagles. 

Game Recap
First Quarter
• After going down 1-0 early on in the first, Niagara rattled off five-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead over Manhattan with 7:13 to play in the opening stanza.
Lexi Braniecki got the scoring started for NU on a player down free position goal, followed by two goals from Allison McCormick and Lois Garlow to put Niagara ahead. 
• The Jaspers made it a two-goal game with 2:59 on the clock before Braniecki, and Eliza Wild found the back of the net to put NU back up by four by the end of the quarter. 

Second Quarter
• Niagara scored three of the four goals in the second. 
Lucy Rugaber scored her first tally of the contest on a player-up opportunity to give NU an 8-3 advantage. 
• After a Manhattan goal, the Purple and White scored back-to-back goals to close out the half. The first goal came from Garlow with 5:41 left, followed by Rugaber's second of the game and quarter. 
• All three of NU's goals in the frame came during player-up opportunities. 

Third Quarter
• The two teams traded goals to start the second half, with Garlow netting her fourth of the game with 11:53 on the clock. 
• The Jaspers scored five-straight to make it an 11-10 game with 1:31 left to go in the third. 
• Garlow and Savage scored goals in an 11-second span to put Niagara back up by three, 13-10 heading into the fourth. 

Fourth Quarter
• Manhattan scored three-straight to start the fourth to tie the game at 13-13. 
• Savage gave the Purple Eagles a one-goal lead with 8:29 to go with her third of the contest. 
• Manhattan would tie the game at 14 less than a minute later. 
• The game would remain tied for the next five minutes when Garlow scored her sixth goal of the contest to give NU a 15-14 lead with 3:41 to play in regulation. 
• Manhattan would tie the game with five seconds remaining to force overtime. 

Overtime
• Niagara nearly won the contest on a free position attempt by Rachel Crane, but the midfielder's shot went off the post. 
• It wasn't until the fourth overtime period that Manhattan scored the game-winner. 

Niagara Notes
Lois Garlow finished the season with 49 goals, 19 assists, and 68 points. The junior is the first Purple Eagle to eclipse the 45-goal mark since Rachel MacCheyne in 2019. 
• All-MAAC Second Team selection, Lexi Braniecki recorded her 10th multi-goal game of the season. 
Andra Savage finished with a season-high five points. The transfer scored 17 goals and assisted eight others during her first season on Monteagle Ridge.
• Senior goalie and MAAC Goalkeeper of the year, Michelle Messenger, stopped a career-high 167 shots this season. 
• Senior Jess Foley collected five ground balls and three caused turnovers Saturday. 
TaNia Cunningham secured six draw controls in the loss, followed by Garlow with four and Rachel Crane and Jenna Brill with three.
