SYRACUSE, NY – The Niagara softball team was topped 6-2 during its midweek non-conference matchup with Syracuse. The Purple Eagles fall to 12-20 overall with the loss.
Game Recap
• The Orange struck for two in the home half of the second inning via a two-run home with two away in the inning.
• In the top of the third, Niagara cut the Cuse lead in half with a leadoff long ball from
Shayna Myshrall.
• The bottom of the third saw Syracuse score three runs, two via a two-run homer with one out.
• With the score 6-1 in the top of the seventh,
Alicia Nash came in to pinch hit and leadoff the inning. The junior started the inning with a base knock and
Madison LaPenta would come in to pinch run at first.
• An error and SAC fly moved LaPenta to third with just one out in the inning,
Bayleigh McCullough would hit a deep fly ball to right field, driving in LaPenta from third for the Purple Eagles second run of the contest.
• The game would end 6-2 in favor of Syracuse.
Niagara Notes
• The Purple Eagles used three pitchers in the contest,
Riley Crum,
Cara Leone, and
Maddie Hickingbottom.
• Hickingbottom struck out four batters in her two innings of work.
• Niagara finished the contest with four hits as Nash, Myshrall,
Samantha Hare, and
Maggie Vesneske all reached base via a base knock.
• Myshrall's home run in the third was her first long ball since March 21, 2021.
• After going 1-for-3 at the plate, Hare has six hits in her last 14 at bats and has recorded a hit in three of her last four games.
• Hickingbottom now has 91 K's on the season becoming the first Purple Eagle to punch out 90 or more batters since Sierra Bertrand struck out 108 in 2019.
