Purple Eagles Swept by Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn – Niagara (12-19, 6-6 MAAC) softball dropped both games of its doubleheader to Fairfield (16-20, 9-5 MAAC) Sunday afternoon in MAAC softball action from Alumni Field in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Game 1 Recap
• Niagara was blanked in game one, 4-0.
Riley Crum got the start for NU and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, four runs (one earned), and striking out four.
• Transfer Cara Leone pitched 3.0 innings out of the pen and only allowed one Stag base runner.
Kaity McInall and Hannah Mingle picked up the two Purple Eagle hits, while Harrigan and Vesneske each drew a walk in the contest.
• Fairfield scored two runs in the first and two in the third en route to the 4-0 win.
 
Game 2 Recap
• The Purple Eagles struck for three runs in game two of the twin bill, but four runs in the fifth led to a 4-3 win for the Stags.
• Niagara scored its first run of the afternoon in the third when Samantha Hare singled up the middle to score Vesneske.
• The Purple and White took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Hare singled and two Fairfield errors led to two runs.
Maddie Hickingbottom had a no-hit bid going into the fifth before surrendering a hit to the Stags in the home half of the inning.
• The Stags would score all four of their runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead over NU.
• Hickingbottom recorded 5.0 innings of work, allowing four hits and four runs, none of which were earned. The junior punched out five in the contest.
Julia Thompson came in to pitch the sixth and struck out two of the three batters she saw.
• Niagara collected nine hits in game two of the twin bill.
 
Niagara Notes
• Hare went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI. She now has 23 RBI on the season.
• Vesneske collected two hits in game two and reached base four times in the doubleheader.
• After allowing just one earned run in her start, Crum now has a 2.62 ERA on the season.
• Hickingbottom dropped her ERA to 5.22 after not allowing a single earned run in 12.0 innings of work this weekend. The junior also stuck out 13 over the weekend and now has 87 on the season.

• The Purple and White will play a midweek doubleheader against Syracuse on Wednesday, April 27. First pitch between the Orange and Purple Eagles is set for 3 p.m. Both games of the twin bill will be streamed live on purpleeagles.com.
