Purple Eagles and Gaels Split a Pair of Pitchers Duels

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Niagara starters combined to strike out 12 and allow just four hits over 13.0 innings of work en route to splitting Saturday's doubleheader against Iona. 

Niagara moves to 12-17 overall and 6-4 in MAAC action following the spilt. 

Game 1 Recap
• After getting burned for two runs (one earned) on two hits in the first inning, Niagara starter Riley Crum allowed just one hit over the next five innings to keep the Purple Eagles in the ball game. 
• Crum finished with four strikeouts in the complete-game loss.  
• The Purple Eagles would manage to get the bases loaded in the fifth to push across their first run of the contest. 
• Freshman Bayleigh McCullough would get credit for the RBI as the designated player drew a 3-2 walk. 
• The Purple Eagles didn't record their first hit in the ball game until two outs in the seventh. A single by Shayna Myshrall
Hannah Mingle would pinch run for Myshrall but be caught trying to take second to end the game. 

Game 2 Recap
• Niagara got another strong outing from its starter in game two as Hickingbottom pitched 6.2 innings of no-hit softball before allowing a hit to the Gaels. 
• Hickingbottom pitched 7.0 shutout innings and struck out eight before being relieved in extra's by Julia Thompson in the eighth. 
• The Purple Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth when Kaity McInall singled to right field with the bases loaded. Samantha Hare, who started the inning with a walk, scored from third on the play. 
• Thompson set the Gaels down in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 1-0 win for the Purple and White. 

Niagara Notes
• McCullough drove in the lone NU run in game one, her fourth RBI of the season. 
• Hare scored the game-winning run in game two and went 2-for-4 with a walk in the day's second game. 
• Thompson was credited with the win in game two after pitching two scoreless innings in relief, dropping her conference ERA to 0.57. 
• After ten league games, Niagara's team ERA is 2.20.
• McInall picked up her 10th RBI of the season after driving in the game two game-winner.
• Hickingbottom registered eight strikeouts and now has seven starts with five or more K's. 

Up Next 
• The Purple Eagles will head to Fairfield, Conn. To take on the Stags tomorrow. The doubleheader at Fairfield is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
