Purple Eagles Sweep MAAC Preseason Favorite Marist

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Purple and White took both games of its doubleheader against MAAC Preseason favorite Marist Saturday afternoon at Niagara Falls High School. Niagara picked up a 4-3 win in game one and a 5-3 comeback win in game two.

Game 1 Recap: W, 4-3
• The Purple and Whites tallied three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead over Marist.
• The Red Foxes got a run back in the second inning to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Riley Crum helped herself in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to straightaway center, putting NU back up by three, 4-1.
• Niagara would have a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh inning. 
• After a leadoff walk for the Red Foxes, Julia Thompson was brought in to close the door for NU.
• The junior would surrender a run but strand the game-tying run at third after striking out Meghan Davis for the final out of the game.
Riley Crum went 4.0 strong in game one, striking out five while allowing three hits, two walks, and two runs.
Cara Leone took over for Crum in the fifth, pitching 2.0 innings in relief.
Maggie Kellner and Crum recorded Niagara's two hits, with Crum's coming via the third inning bomb. Crum drove in two of NU's four runs.

Game 2 Recap: W, 5-3
• Niagara was down 3-0 and found themselves hitless heading into the fifth inning of game two.
Madison LaPenta pinch ran for Heather Haberman after she drew the leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth inning.
• Kellner ripped a double to the left-field wall to advance LaPenta to third and put two runners in scoring position with no one out.
• Crum walked to load the bases, and Niagara scored their first run of the game on a wild pitch two batters later.
• Three-straight walks tied the game for the Purple Eagles, and two batters later, Samantha Hare drove in two with a two-out RBI single down the left-field line.
• The score would remain the same heading into the seventh when Thompson once again came in to get the save and clinch the series-sweep of Marist.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara improves to 17-26 against Marist dating back to 2003. Saturday also marked the first regular season-series sweep of the Red Foxes since 2008.
• The Purple Eagles are 2-0 to start league play for the first time since 2008, when they started 3-0 in MAAC action.
• Crum picked up her second win of the season and now has a 1.94 ERA.
• Leone pitched 5.0 innings out of the pen, allowing four hits and just one run.
• Kellner paced the NU offense, finishing the day 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI.
• Haberman, a Preseason All-MAAC selection, made her season debut for the Purple and White.

• Niagara will continue its homestand to start league play with a doubleheader with the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sunday, April 3. The first pitch between the Purple Eagles and Bobcats is scheduled for noon at Niagara Softball Field. The games will be streamed live on purpleeagles.com
