Niagara Takes Two From Bobcats

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Purple Eagles earned a series win over Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon with 9-1 and 5-4 victories over the Bobcats in MAAC softball action on Monteagle Ridge. 


Niagara improves to 4-0 in league play and 8-9 overall with the wins. 


Game 1 Recap: W, 9-1
• Niagara only needed five innings to pick up the game one win over the Bobcats. 
• The Purple Eagles scored three in the bottom of the first, with Maggie Kellner, Riley Crum, and Shayna Myshrall driving in a run. 
• In the second, NU made it a 7-0 ball game thanks to an RBI single from Samantha Hare, followed by RBIs from Heather Haberman and Kellner. 
• Quinnipiac would score a run in the top of the third, but the Purple Eagles answered in the bottom half with a tally, scored by Hannah Mingle on a wild pitch. 
• Bayliegh McCullough would lead off the fifth with a pinch-hit double to center. The freshman would later come around to score the game-clinching run on a Hare walk after Niagara loaded the bases. 
• Hare finished game one with one hit, two RBI, and three walks. Kellner also collected two RBI in the offensive outburst and finished the first leg of the doubleheader 1-for-3 at the dish. 
• Crum got the start in the circle for Niagara, pitching 3.0 innings and picking up, allowing two hits and one run. 
Cara Leone came in to pitch in the fourth and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings. 


Game 2 Recap: W, 5-4
• Niagara jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Myshrall flew hit a sac fly to center to score Hare. 
• Kellner would score on a passed ball to make it a 2-0 game, followed by a Crim single that scored pinch-runner Madison LaPenta from first.  
• In the fifth, Hare singled through the left side of the infield to score Kelsey Harrigan and make it a 4-0 Purple Eagle lead. 
• Quinnipiac tied the game with a four-run top of the sixth. 
• Before the start of the sixth, Niagara starter Maddie Hickingbottom had no-hit the Bobcats through five. She would be relieved by Julia Thompson after allowing two hits, a walk, and a run to start the sixth. 
• Haberman would start the home half of the sixth with a single, and Hannah Mingle would come in to run for the grad student.
• Mingle, who represented the go-ahead run, advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third to put herself into scoring position.  
• McCullough was called on to pinch-hit for Kaity McInall, and she would ground out to second, allowing Mingle to score the eventual game-winning run. 
• Thompson, who came in for Hickingbottom in the sixth, put the Bobcats down in order in the seventh to complete the sweep.


Niagara Notes
• The Purple Eagles' 4-0 start to league play is the team's best since beginning league play 3-0 in 2008. 
• Niagara improves to 9-11 all-time against Quinnipiac and 8-10 since the Bobcats joined the MAAC in 2013. 
• The Purple and White's nine runs in game one matched its season-high set on March 11 against Merrimack. 
• Hare finished the twin bill with three walks, three runs scored, and three RBI. The sophomore outfielder now has a team-high 14 RBI this season. 
• Kellner has hit safely in four straight games, and Harrigan improves her on-base streak to six games. 
• Haberman picked up her first two hits of the season on Sunday. The grad student also scored twice in the sweep. 
• Thompson got the win in game two, her second of the season. 
• Crum improved to 3-2 in the circle with her victory in game one. 


Up Next 
• Niagara will travel to Youngstown, Ohio, to take on the Penguins of Youngstown State Wednesday, April 6. The twin bill against YSU is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
