Niagara Defeats Fairfield in Overtime

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Junior Lois Garlow scored the sudden-victory goal 36 seconds into the extra frame to lift Niagara (9-5, 5-1 MAAC) over Fairfield (8-6, 3-3 MAAC) Saturday afternoon in MAAC women's lacrosse action on Monteagle Ridge. 

Game Recap
First Quarter
• The Purple Eagles scored three straight goals to start the contest, with the first coming off the stick of Lex Braniecki. 
Rachel Crane found her younger sister Jalyn Crane for the Purple Eagles' second tally of the contest at the 11:42 mark of the opening frame. 
• Garlow made it a 3-0 Niagara lead with her 39th goal of the season 5:32 into the first. 
• With 3:09 left in the opening stanza, Fairfield would beat Messenger for its game's first goal. 

Second Quarter
• The teams would trade goals in the second quarter, with Niagara taking a 6-4 lead at the intermission. 
Jaclyn Crane scored two goals in the second, one via a free-position attempt.
• Braniecki scored her second goal of the contest at the 3:37 mark, putting Niagara up three before Fairfield made it a two-goal game 46 seconds before the end of the quarter. 

Third Quarter
• Fairfield scored two goals in the third to tie the game at six, with 5:26 remaining in the stanza. 
• Niagara, who was held scoreless for more than 18-minutes of action before Braniecki found the back of the net to put the Purple and White back up one, 7-6, with 14 seconds to go in the quarter,

Fourth Quarter
• The Purple Eagles would go up by two, 8-6 when Garlow found Rachel Crane for her first tally of the game. 
• The Stags would score back-to-back tallies to tie the game at eight with 9:05 to go. 
• Over the next six minutes, Niagara built its lead back to two goals with a pair of tallies from Braniecki, making the score 10-8 in favor of the Purple Eagles. 
• In the final two minutes of the fourth, Fairfield would tie the game and force overtime.

Overtime
• Niagara won the draw to start overtime, and 36 seconds later, Andra Savage found Garlow for the game-winner. 

Niagara Notes
• Niagara improves to 5-1 in MAAC play and currently sits atop the MAAC standings with two conference games left. 
• The Purple and White also improve to 4-0 at home and 6-1 when going into the fourth quarter with a lead. 
• Braniecki recorded her second five-goal performance of the season and eclipsed the 30-goal mark in the win. Braniecki is the first Purple Eagle to score 30 or more goals in each of her first two seasons since Rachel MacCheyne.
• Garlow reached 40 goals for the season with her two tallies Saturday afternoon. 
• Senior goalkeeper Michelle Messenger picked up her eighth win in the cage this season and her sixth-consecutive game with double-digit stops. 
Jaclyn Crane recorded her first career hat trick in the win and now has 14 goals this season.
• As a team, NU won 14 of the games with 25 draw controls, with TaNia Cunningham recording a team-high six, followed by Jenna Brill with five. 
• Cunningham and Eliza Wild caused a pair of turnovers as the team picked up nine on the afternoon. 
Mackenzie Bushnell led Niagara with four ground balls, followed by Wild with three and Rachel Crane and Jess Foley with two. 


Up Next
• Niagara will host ACC foe Louisville on Monday, April 18, to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule. The opening draw between the Purple Eagles and Cardinals is scheduled for noon on ESPN+.
