Rider Pitching Too Much for Niagara

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Niagara softball team was held to just three hits and one run over two games Sunday afternoon, resulting in a sweep for the Rider Broncs in MAAC softball action from Lawrenceville, N.J.

Game 1 Recap: L, 0-5
• Niagara was hitless through three before Maggie Vesneske led off the fourth with a double, but that is where she would stay as NU was unable to push across the game-tying run.
• The Purple and White would put two runners on in the top of the fifth, but the Rider starter, Anna-Mari Groskritz, once again worked out of trouble to keep the Broncs on top, 1-0.
• Rider added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
• Niagara's starter Riley Crum went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits. The junior struck out one batter.
Cara Leone came in to relieve Crum in the fifth, lasting just one-third of an inning, allowing four runs on one hit and three walks.
Julia Thompson pitched 1.2 innings after coming into the circle with one out in the fifth.
• Niagara collected one hit in game one, the double off the bat of Vesneske in the top of the fourth.
• Niagara left five runners on base.

Game 2 Recap:
• Rider scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Niagara would respond with a run in the top of the second, tying the game at 1-1.
• The Broncs would manufacture a run in the home portion of the second to retake the lead.
• Despite scoring a run in the second, the Purple and White were held hitless until a Kaity McInall single up the middle in the sixth.
• Rider would score in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead over NU.
• In the top of the seventh, Niagara got the game-tying run to the plate but failed to score in the inning.
• Maddie Hickcingbottom pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out four.
