Purple Eagles Top Penguins in Tuesday Doubleheader

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Purple Eagles picked up a two-game sweep of Youngstown State Tuesday afternoon following a 14-strikeout performance by Maddie Hickingbottom in a 2-0 shutout win in game two.

Game 1 Recap: W, 7-6
• The Purple Eagles found themselves in an early 4-0 hole as the Penguins put across four in the first inning.
• Niagara would get one run back in the home half following a Maggie Kellner single that drove in Kelsey Harrigan.
• A second Purple Eagle run came across in the third on a Riley Crum RBI single that scored Samantha Hare and cut the YSU lead in half, 4-2.
• In the bottom of the fourth, the Purple and White plated four runs to take a 6-4 lead over the visiting Penguins.
• Hare drove in two with a single to tie the game, and Kellner helped plate the two go-ahead runs with a hard-hit ball to first, resulting in a pair of Penguin errors.
• Niagara scored its seventh run in the fifth with a single from Maggie Vesneske that plated Hannah Mingle.
• The Penguins pulled within one and had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the seventh when Maddie Hickingbottom was called on to pitch.
• The junior fanned two of the final three YSU batters to strand the game-tying run at third and earn the save.
• After allowing four runs in the first, Crum settled down and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, three walks, and striking out two.
Cara Leone pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing three hits and one run with one strikeout.

Game 2 Recap: W, 2-0
• Hickingbottom pitched a two-hit complete-game shutout in game two, striking out 14 batters.
• Niagara's two runs came in the second inning following a lead-off double by Kellner. The sophomore later scored on an error by the first baseman with the bases loaded.
• Crum would score two batters later with a bases-loaded walk by Vesneske.
• Kellner and Kaity McInall collected two hits in the win, followed by Hare, who finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate.
• Niagara drew two free passes while Hickingbottom did not surrender a single walk to a Penguin batter.

• Kellner finished 3-for-7 at the plate, including her seventh multi-hit game in game two.
• The game two shutout was Niagara's fourth shutout this season and first since Saturday, April 9, at Monmouth.
