Fairfield Holds on to Defeat NU, 75-72

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Niagara (7-12, 4-7 MAAC) made a season-high 11 3-pointers, and Ally Haar finished with a game-best 19 points, but the Purple Eagles comeback effort fell short Thursday night as Fairfield (14-6, 11-1 MAAC) held on for a 75-72 win. 
 
Lore Porter added 11 points off the bench, and Angel Parker reached double-figures for the fifth-straight game as Niagara shot a season-best 50.0 percent from the field. 
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• Fairfield scored the first six points of the game with back-to-back 3-pointers. 
• Those two first baskets helped Fairfield jump out to an 11-5 lead over Niagara at the 4:54 mark.  
Angel Parker scored the first five points for the Purple Eagles with a layup and 3-pointer. 
• Niagara went on a 10-0 run that lasted 2:50 of the quarter and helped Niagara take a 17-13 lead over the hometown Stags.   
Olivia Mason tied the game at 13 before Aaliyah Parker made two at the line to give NU its first lead of the contest. 
• Fairfield would make two free throws at the end of the frame to draw within two heading into the second. 
 
Second Quarter
• Fairfield tied the game at 17 with a pair of free throws to start the second. 
Ally Haar made her first 3-pointer of the contest to give NU a 20-17 advantage early in the second. 
• The Stags used the next 3:52 to take a 26-22 lead and forced the Purple and White to take a timeout. 
Lore Porter and Brooklyn Jones connected on back-to-back layups to trim the Stags lead to one possession, 28-26. 
• The Stags would close the first half on a 9-0 run, giving them a 37-26 lead over the Purple and White. 
• Niagara was 10-for-20 from the field and 4-for-7 from the line in the first half. 
 
Third Quarter
• The Stags scored the first four points of the third quarter, extending its lead out to 15, 41-26.
• Aaliyah ended Niagara's 4:37 scoreless streak with a layup with 8:36 on the clock. 
• Haar connected on her third 3-pointer of the game to make it a 45-35 game in favor of the Stags. 
Lore Porter connected on a 3-pointer, the team's third of the quarter, to make the score 52-41. 
• Haar would hit a 3-pointer from the wing, and Brooklyn Jones made two at the line to put NU down seven, 56-49, with just under a minute to go in the third.
• Niagara made five 3-pointers in the quarter to trim the Stags lead to single digits by the time the buzzer sounded. 
 
Fourth Quarter
• Niagara brought the Fairfield lead down to three, 58-55, with a 14-3 run that started with 1:57 left in the third. Porter capped the run with her third 3-pointer of the contest. 
• Yelle would put the Purple Eagles down one, 58-57, with 6:28 on the clock. Fairfield would answer with a jumper of its own on the ensuing possession to go back up by three. 
• Fairfield would score the game's next five points to go up 67-60.
• Haar made her fifth 3-pointer with 1:35 to go, making it a two-point game, 67-65. 
• The senior would make her sixth 3-pointer of the contest to put Niagara down 73-71 with six seconds remaining. 
• Angel was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt with one second left. She would sink one of those free throw attempts, giving the game its 75-72 final. 
 
Niagara Notes
• The Purple Eagles fall to 25-43 all-time against the Stags. 
• Haar finished with 19 points, her third straight game reaching double figures. 
• Niagara made a season-high 11 3-pointers Thursday night. Haar made a team-high six from deep, while Porter connected on three. 
• Haar is now 11 for her last 20 from behind the arc going back to last Thursday's contest against Siena. Her six makes tonight matches her career-high set earlier this season versus Loyla Md.
• Niagara made 50.0 (11-for-22) of its 3-pointers for the second game in a row. It was also the fifth game in a row Niagara shot better than 40.0 percent from the field.   
• Porter matched her career-best with 11 points. The sophomore has scored 11 points three times this season, including tonight, with the last time coming against Cornell on Dec. 4.
• Niagara forced 18 turnovers, translating into 26 points for the Purple and White. 
• The Purple Eagles recorded 32 rebounds, with Mason leading the way with eight boards. Aaliyah added six, followed by Haar with five. 
• Angel finished seven assists, recording her 13th game with more than five helpers. 
 
Up Next
• Niagara will head to Riverdale, N.Y. for a Saturday afternoon battle with Manhattan. Tip-off between the Purple Eagles and Jaspers is set for 2 p.m.
