Niagara Wins Fifth-Straight with 59-45 Victory at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, NY –Niagara (12-12, 9-7 MAAC) won its fifth-straight game with a 59-45 victory over Iona (7-13, 5-10 MAAC) Thursday night in MAAC women's hoops action from the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.  

Aaliyah Parker led the way for NU Thursday night, going 9-for-13 from the field for a total of 21 points. The freshman added five rebounds and three steals in the win. Angel Parker (13), Olivia Mason (12), and Ally Haar (10) also recorded double-digit scoring numbers.

Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara and Iona were tied at 2-2 before the Purple Eagles broke off a 6-0 run over the next minute and a half to take an early 8-2 lead.
• An Iona field goal wouldn't slow down NU as it built an 11-4 lead by the 7:00 mark of the opening quarter.  
• The next two minutes of the game would see neither team score keeping it deadlocked at 11-4 in favor of Niagara.
• With 2:03 on the clock, Iona, who was on an 8-2 run, had pulled with one, 13-12.
Angel Parker would connect on a floater to give NU a three-point advantage as the quarter came to a close.

Second Quarter
• Niagara opened the scoring in the second with a layup from Aaliyah Parker. The freshman would connect on another layup moments later to give the Purple Eagles a seven-point lead, 19-12.
• The Purple Eagles lead grew to nine, 21-12, by the eight-minute mark of the second stanza.
• Five unanswered by the Gaels made the score 21-17 with 3:34 remaining in the half.
• After the Gaels pulled within three, 24-21, Niagara would build its lead back to nine, 30-21, by the time the quarter came to a close.
• The Purple Eagles shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 33.3 percent for the Gaels.

Third Quarter
• Five straight points by the Purple and White gave Niagara a 37-23 lead over the hometown Gaels with 7:25 remaining in the third.
• The 14-point lead was the largest of the night for the Purple Eagles, forcing Iona to call timeout.
• Following a timeout, the Gaels scored five unanswered of their own to make it a 37-28 game with 5:52 left in the stanza.
• Niagara's three-minute scoreless streak allowed Iona to make the score 37-30, but Mason would end that streak and put NU back up nine, 39-30.
• With 1:40 on the clock, Iona would connect on a 3-pointer, bringing the Niagara advantage down to six, 41-35.
• The Gaels, who once found themselves down 14 earlier in the third, would trail by just five, 42-37, heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
• After Iona pulled within three, 42-39, the Purple Eagles would respond with four-straight points to go up, 46-39.
• Niagara would call timeout with 5:58 on the clock as it saw its lead be trimmed to three, 46-43.
• Back-to-back jumpers from Ally Haar and Olivia Mason put NU back on top by seven, 50-43, with 4:30 left in the contest.
• Niagara would use a 13-2 run over the final five minutes of play to win its fifth straight.
• Angel and Aaliyah went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of action to seal the win for the Purple and White.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara last won five straight in 2014-15; however, the Purple Eagles' last five-game win streak in MAAC play came during the 2003-04 season.
• The Purple and White have won by more than 10-points in three games during the win streak.
• Thursday was the first time since Jan. 20 at Monmouth that Niagara was held under 60 points.
• The Purple and White scored 23 points off 25 Iona turnovers. Mason and Aaliyah led the team with three steals each.
• Mason led NU with nine boards, one shy of her second double-double of the season.
• Angel recorded her third game this season with eight assists as the Purple and White finished with 14 helpers as a team.
• Aaliyah reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season, all of which have come during league play.

Up Next
• The Purple Eagles will head to Hamden, Conn., to take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday. Tip-off between the Purple and White and Bobcats is scheduled for 1 p.m.
