Volleyball's MAAC Championship Run Comes To An End

Lake Buena Vista, FL—The Niagara Volleyball team saw their season come to an end on Thursday as they fell to the top ranked Fairfield Stags in the quarter-finals of the MAAC Championship.
Game Recap
First Set
  • The top ranked Stags jumped out to a quick lead in the opening set as they were up 4-1. Niagara did not give in as they came back and trailed 8-7 after the first 15 points of the match.
  • Niagara kept it close throughout the set and were down by just three at multiple points in the set.
  • Despite keeping it close, the Purple Eagles could not overcome the deficit as they fell 25-18 in the opening set.
  • Six different players had kills in the opening set with senior Allie Simpson leading the way with three of the teams 12 kills.
  • Kelly McArthur had a team high five digs in the set while Niagara had two blocks as well.
Second Set
  • In the second set of the day, Niagara was the one who jumped out an early lead as they took a 5-1 lead on the MAAC regular season champs.
  • The Purple Eagles had a lead as high as six when it was 10-4, the Stags did not stagger however and tied the set at 18.
  • The two teams traded points after it was tied up with Fairfield ultimately taking the set, there was only one lead change in the set.
  • Casey Brown had a set high 11 digs for the Purple Eagles while Kinga Wronska had six.
  • Liana Tolliver picked up where she left off on Wednesday as she had five kills in the set, Lexi Bapst and McArthur had three apiece in the set.
Third Set
  • Fighting for their season, the Purple Eagles came out swinging in the third set as they traded the first 10 points with Fairfield as it was 5-5.
  • Fairfield opened a four point lead as it was 11-7 but Niagara stuck around and tied it at 13.
  • It was constant back and forth between the teams and Niagara took their first lead of the set as they made it 20-19 on an ace from Kylie Blessing.
  • Niagara would not give up their lead as they finished out the set with a 25-23 win.
  • McArthur led the team with four wins in the set while the duo of Tolliver and Simpson combined for six kills with each having three.
Fourth Set
  • In the fourth set, the two teams traded points until Niagara opened up 7-4 lead. The Stags bounced back and made it 11-8 to take the lead.
  • Fairfield kept building their lead and the Purple Eagles could not gain momentum to create a comeback.
  • Niagara made four point set at 22-16 but could not comeback and tie it up.
  • Bapst led the team with five kills in the final set. McArthur had a team high five digs in the set. Taylor Allen and Simpson combined for block in their final set as Purple Eagles.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara had five players with double digits digs as Wronska and Bella Peroni had 16 each. McArthur had 13 while Tolliver and Brown each had 11 digs.
  • Tolliver and Bapst each had 12 kills to tie for the team lead while Simpson had 11 kills.
  • Niagara had eight blocks, Allen had five block assists while Tolliver had three assisted blocks.
  • Wronska finished the season as the team leader in kills, aces, and digs. She was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team on Wednesday night.
