Purple Eagles Top Roberts Wesleyan, 72-63, in Exhibition Contest

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Three Purple Eagles registered double-digit points, highlighted by a double-double from Braxton Bayless, as Niagara topped Roberts Wesleyan 72-63 in an exhibition contest Tuesday night at the Gallagher Center.
 
First Half
• Niagara made two of its first three shots from the floor to jump out to a 5-0 lead over the Redhawks.
• Roberts Wesleyan would pull within one 9-8 following an 8-4 spurt that lasted 2:33 of game time.
• Niagara would take a six-point lead over the visitors after Bayless made two at the line to make it a 17-11 game.
• After Roberts Wesleyan got within one, 17-16, Aaron Gray and the rest of the Purple Eagles would go on a 7-2 run which Gray capped off with his first 3-point basket of the night.
• With 7:14 remaining in the first, Niagara would outscore Roberts Wesleyan 16-9 over the next 5:47 of game time to take a 13-point advantage, 40-27.
• During the run, Noah Thomasson scored six, and Keith Kiner III tallied four of NU's 16, while Gray and Sam Iorio, and Bryce Moore combined for six.
• The Purple Eagles would maintain its 13-point lead heading into the break with a 43-30 advantage.
 
Second Half
• Roberts Wesleyan would use an 11-2 run to start the second half and pull within four, 45-41, with 10:30 left in the contest.
• The Redhawks would get within three, 48-45, by the 8:09 mark, before the Purple and White rolled off a 12-2 run to go back up by 13, 60-47.
• Gray contributed six points, and Thomasson added four as NU went 3-for-8 from the field and 6-for-8 at the line during the four-minute stretch.
• After taking its largest lead of the night, 65-50, with 1:58 on the clock, Niagara's Bayless and Shane Lancaster would score the team's final seven points of the contest at the line to secure a 72-63 victory over Roberts Wesleyan.
 
Niagara Notes
• The Purple Eagles finished the contest shooting 32.8 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from 3-point range, and 74.4 percent at the line.
• Niagara outrebounded the Redhawks 42-30.
• Of NU's 72 points, 32 came inside the paint, and another 16 came via second-chance opportunities.
• Bayless finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Gray led NU with 15 points on 5-for-16 shooting.
• Thomasson also finished in double figures with 11 points.
• Kiner and Iorio each scored nine points and went 5-for-6 at the line.
Lance Erving collected a team-high four assists.
 
Up Next
• Niagara will officially open the 2022-23 season in College Park against BIG 10 foe Maryland on Monday, Nov. 7. The game is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the Xfinity Center.
