FAIRFIELD, CT – Maia MacLean and
Alexis Horwedel found the back of the net as the Purple Eagles fell to Fairfield on the road by the final score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon in MAAC women's soccer action from Lessing Field. Niagara drops to 9-6-1 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play with the result.
Game Recap
First Half
• Niagara goalie
Agnes Stenlund was put to work early with a shot on goal from the Stags in 2nd minute of action, but the freshman netminder was there for the save.
• She would make another save five minutes later to keep the game scoreless.
•
Emma Bough put the Purple Eagles' first shot on goal in the 21st minute of play, but the stop was made by the Fairfield keeper.
• The Stags would get the opening marker in the 25th minute of action.
•
Maia MacLean would take a pair of shots before finding the back of the net in the 41st minute to level things at one.
Emma Davies and
Amanda Cripps found MacLean for the goal.
• The Stags would respond quickly, making it a 2-1 game moments before the end of the first half.
Second Half
• Niagara would once again level things in the 51st minute when MacLean passed the ball to Alexis horwedel who launched a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net for the goal.
• Stenlund would make back-to-back saves in the 55th and 56th minutes of action, keeping the game tied at 2-2.
• Cripps would nearly give NU its first lead of the contest when she put a shot on goal, but the Stag goalie was in position to make the play.
• Fairfield would score the game-winning goal in the 81st minute, getting another one past Stenlund.
• Bough would attempt to tie it for Niagara later on, but come up short as the game would end in a 3-2 loss for NU.
Niagara Notes
• Niagara saw its shutout streak of 661:46 come to an end with the Stags' first goal of the contest.
• Horwedel and MacLean found the back of the net for the first time this season.
• MacLean also recorded her first helper of the year on the Purple Eagles' second goal.
• Cripps moved her season points total to eight with her second assist of the season.
• Davies notched her first assist of the year in the loss.
• Stenlund's six saves is the most by a Purple Eagle this season, and a career-high for the first-year netminder.
