NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Niagara women's soccer program extended it's shutout streak to 637:47 with it's seventh-straight clean sheet and a 2-0 win over Iona Wednesday afternoon. The Purple Eagles got goals from
Emma Bough and
Annie Ibey to improve to 9-5-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play this season.
Game Recap
First Half
• The Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead over Iona in the 6th minute when
Annie Ibey found
Emma Bough inside the 18-yard box for the first goal of the contest.
• Bough would repay the favor in the 30th minute of action when she sent a long pass downfield to Ibey who then found the back of the net to give NU a 2-0 lead.
• Ibey would take a trio of shots through the remainder of the half but came up empty each time. Her shot in the 33rd minute was saved by the Iona keeper, followed by a blocked shot and one that went off the crossbar in the 44th minute.
• Iona got only one shot off in the first half but the attempt was wide of the goal and didn't threaten NU goalie,
Felicia Grufman.
Second Half
• Iona would take its second shot of the game in the 50th minute, but once again it wasn't on target to threaten Grufman.
• Emily Hahnel would take a shot in the 71st minute of play but her attempt narrowly missed the far post for the goal.
• The game would end with the score 2-0 in favor of Niagara as the Gaels failed to register a shot on goal in the contest.
Niagara Notes
• Niagara's 637:47 of shutout soccer is the longest streak in program history. The streak is also among the longest in the NCAA this season.
• The Purple and White improve to 15-7-2 all-time against the Gaels, including wins in four of the last five games.
• Niagara's nine clean sheet's this season is one shy of the single-season record set in 2014.
• Ibey recorded her sixth goal of the season and 26th of her career and is one shy of tying for eighth all time in program history.
• Bough registered her third goal and team leading sixth assist of the season.
• Grufman gets credit for her fifth clean sheet of the season, despite not making a save.
