Purple Eagles Fall in Home Opener to AIC

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The AIC Yellow Jackets defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles Friday night at Dwyer Arena by the final score of 6-3. Ryan Cox, Carter Randklev, and Jay Ahearn each scored for the Purple and White in the loss.
 
Game Recap
First Period
• Niagara had seven of its 12 shots go on goal in the first period of play, but after the first 20-minutes on the clock came off the board the game remained scoreless.
• AIC took a total of 16 shots in the opening frame, with 10 landing on net.
Chad Veltri stopped seven in the first.
 
Second Period
• AIC opened the scoring in the second period with a pair of goals, the first from Juluis Janhonen, 1:34 into the period, followed by a tally by Dustin Manz, less than a minute later.
Ryan Cox would put Niagara down by one with his third goal of the season after Jay Ahearn found his teammate from behind the AIC net. Shane Ott also got credit for an assist on the play. The goal was scored with less than eight minutes remaining in the period.
• The Yellow Jackets would regain its two-goal lead on the power play, with a goal from Dustin Manz, his second of the game.
• With 4:40 remaining in the period, Niagara's Carter Randklev would attack the net for a goal to once again put NU down by one. The goal was assisted by Olivier Gauiter and Josef Mysak.
• AIC would respond with its fourth goal of the frame, this one with 2:15 on the clock from Oscar Geschwind. 
 
Third Period
• Niagara would get one back during an early power play opportunity. Randklev and Noah Carlin found Ahearn at the left face-off dot and the forward found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
• Geschwind would put the Yellow Jackets up 5-3 with his second tally of the contest 1:51 into the period.
• Niagara would have multiple chances to cut into the AIC lead takin a dozen shots over the next 10-minutes of game action.
• The Purple Eagles would empty the net with 3:12 on the clock in the third.
• AIC would score on the empty net with 28.2 on the clock to take a 6-3 lead over NU.
 
Niagara Notes
• The Purple Eagles had 903 fans in attendance Friday night, the most for a home opener since head coach Jason Lammers' first year at the helm when 1,020 attended the home opener against Robert Morris.
• Of the 903 fans in attendance 324 of them were Niagara students.
Ryan Cox and Jay Ahearn have now scored a goal in each game this season.
Chad Veltri made 24 saves. The senior falls to 2-1 between the pipes this season.
• Niagara won 44 of the games face offs, led by 14 from Cox, 13 from Pineo and 12 from Albin Nilsson.
