Purple Eagles Remain Unbeaten in MAAC Play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Niagara men's soccer team improved to 3-0-1 in MAAC play with a 2-0 win over Siena Wednesday afternoon at Hickey Field. Gabriel Mikina and Emmanuel Obiefuna scored for the Purple Eagles and Josh Savoni stopped four shots en route to the win.  
 
 Game Recap
 First Half
Nuukele Gboe nearly gave Niagara a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play but his shot was blocked by a Siena defender.
• A Niagara corner in the fifth minute resulted in a pair of shots for NU, both of which were saved by Greg Monroe.
• The Saints would take a corner in the eighth minute of play that wouldn't trouble Savoni as it was quickly cleared out.
• Savoni made his first save in the 17th minute of play when Thomas Storodegard sent one to the bottom right of the goal.
Alberto Sanchez Cervera took a shot in the 26th minute of play that went just high of the net, keeping the score 0-0.
• In the 28th minute, Niagara would take a pair of shots with the latter of the two going off the post.
• In the 32nd minute of action the Purple Eagles would be awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and Mikina would go top shelf for the goal, giving Niagara a 1-0 lead.
• The Purple and White would take one more shot before the break but it wouldn't be able to add to the lead.
 
 Second Half
•  It didn't take long for NU to go up by two in the second half as Obiefuna headed a Stephen Hasse cross home for the goal in the 52nd minute.  
• Over the next seven minutes of play, Niagara would take five shots and two corner attempts but the lead would remain 2-0 with just over 30-minutes left in the contest.
Federico Cugge looked to give the Purple Eagles a 3-0 lead in the 79th minute but his shot was saved by Monroe.
• Siena would take a pair of shots in the final 10-minutes of action, neither of which tested Savoni.

"I am very proud of our guys getting another clean sheet and another road victory, they are showing a lot of adaptability and grit defending the box and outside the touchline. We are excited to come and celebrate our Seniors this Saturday against Rider."
 
 Niagara Notes
• Niagara is now unbeaten through its first four games of league play for the first time since 2006.
• The Purple Eagles also picked up their first win in Loudonville since 2010.
• Mikina scored his fourth goal of the season and now sits one shy of the team lead held by Rodrigo Almeida.
• Obiefuna notched his first goal of his career.
• Savoni picked up his third clean sheet of the season, matching his career-high set during the spring of 2021.  
• Savoni's clean sheet brings him to 10 career shutouts which ranks third all-time in program history.
