NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Gabriel Mikina scored twice as Niagara (3-5-1, 2-0-0) defeated Saint Peter's (1-7-1, 0-2-0) 2-0 Saturday evening in MAAC men's soccer action from Niagara Field.
Game Recap
First Half
• Saint Peter's took the game's first shot but
Josh Savoni was there for the save.
• Niagara took back-to-back shots in the 11th minute, but neither were able to beat the SPU keeper.
• The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the 17th minute of play when
Gabriel Mikina found the back of the net following a Niagara throw in.
Rodrigo Almeida was credited with the assist after heading the ball toward his teammate.
• Neither squad would test the opposing keeper for the remainder of the half.
Second Half
•
Nuukele Gboe took the Purple Eagles' first shot of the half in the 47th minute.
• Saint Peter's would head one over the goal in the 51st minute of play following a free kick.
• Niagara would take its third corner of the night in the 56th minute but
Stephen Hasse's cross was punched away by the Saint Peter's keeper.
• Moments later on another Niagara corner, Hasse found Mikina for his second goal of the game, giving NU a 2-0 lead.
• Mikina nearly scored his third in the 66th minute when his headed attempt was blocked by the Peacock defense.
Niagara Notes
• Niagara is now 13-15-5 all-time against the Peacocks after Saturday's result.
• Mikina scored twice in the contest, matching his career-high set against Monmouth last season.
• Mikina is the second Purple Eagle this season to record a multi-goal game, joining
Alberto Sanchez Cervera.
• Savoni recorded his second-straight clean sheet, making one save.
