Niagara Defeats Canisius in Overtime

BUFFALO, NY – Niagara (5-6, 2-1 MAAC) erased a 12-point deficit to earn the overtime win, 87-86, against Canisius (2-10, 0-3 MAAC) Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action from the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Kyra Grimshaw scored a career-high 23 points going 8-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point line. Olivia Mason recorded her first double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. 
 
Game Recap 
First Quarter
• The first portion of the first quarter saw two ties and two lead changes. 
• With 4:48 on the clock and the game tied at eight, Grimshaw connected on a 3-pointer to give Niagara an 11-8 lead.
• That basket sparked an 18-8 outburst by the Purple and White, which resulted in a 26-16 lead at the end of the frame. 
• Niagara went 7-for-8 from the field during the run to finish the frame 10-for-14 from the floor. 

Second Quarter
• Canisius used an 11-0 run to retake the lead 29-28 with 3:42 remaining in the second.  
• Grimshaw and Haar would go 3-for-4 from the line, ending a 5:57 scoreless streak for Niagara and tying the game at 31. 
• Haar would end the quarter going 2-for-3 from the charity stripe, putting Niagara down one, 34-33 at the break. 
• After making 10 shots from the field in the first, Niagara made just one field goal in the second.

Third Quarter
• Canisius held the lead for the entire third stanza, with NU coming within one three times, 36-35 at the 9:25 mark, 41-40 with 7:10 remaining, and again with 1:42 left on the clock 50-49. 
• The Purple Eagles tied the game twice, the first time at 44 after a Haar layup with 5:19 on the clock and again with 1:07 on a 3-pointer from Lore Porter
• Canisius would score the last five points in the stanza to take a 57-52 lead into the fourth. 

Fourth Quarter
• A 7-0 run to start the fourth gave Canisius a 64-54 lead and forced Niagara to call timeout.
• Niagara used a 9-0 run to trim the Canisius lead to three points at the 4:14 mark, 69-66. 
Brooklyn Jones scored three points for Niagara during the run, while Yelle, Glover, and Grimshaw added two points. 
• Mason would tie the game at 73-73 with 12.1 seconds remaining after finishing the old-fashioned 3-point play at the line. 
• Niagara would make the defensive stand to force overtime.

Overtime
• Grimshaw hit a 3-pointer to open the extra frame, giving Niagara its first lead since the second quarter, 76-73. 
• Back-to-back layups by Grimshaw and Yelle gave NU an 80-75 lead over Canisius. 
• Niagara called a timeout with 1:25 remaining and an 82-79 lead. 
• Faulcon made a layup at the line to give NU an 87-81 advantage with 8.5 seconds remaining.
• Niagara would hold on to complete the comeback and earn the Battle of the Bridge win, 87-84  

Niagara Notes
• Sunday was the first overtime game for Niagara since Jan. 23, 2021, against Marist. 
• It also marked the first win for Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center since Jan. 27, 2013. 
• Niagara has now come back to win three games where it trailed by 10 or more points. 
• Grimshaw also set a career-high with nine rebounds. 
• Haar and Yelle also reached double-digits with 15 and 14 points, respectively. 
• Haar led Niagara with six assists.
• Faulcon reached double-digit rebounds for the second time in three games with 11 boards. 
 
Up Next
• Niagara will return to the Gallagher Center for two games on Thursday, Jan. 13, for a 2 p.m. contest with Fairfield, followed by a 2 p.m. bout with Rider on Saturday, Jan. 15.
