Marist Defeats Niagara, 72-65

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Angel Parker finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and seven steals, but Niagara fell to Marist, 72-65, in MAAC women's basketball action from McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
 
Niagara is now 6-10 overall, and 3-5 in MAAC play this season. 
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara and Marist traded baskets in the first quarter, but the Red Foxes were able to take a 17-15 lead into the second. 
Maddy Yelle connected on a jumper as time expired in the opening quarter to put the Purple Eagles down two.
Aaliyah Parker came off the bench and scored a team-high six points in the quarter. 
• The Purple Eagles finished the first with a 31.6 percent field goal percentage. 
 
Second Quarter
• Back-to-back free throws by Angel to start the second tied the game at 17. 
• With the game tied at 19-19 with 8:20 remaining in the half, the Red Foxes scored eight-straight points to take a 27-19 lead over Niagara. 
• The run lasted 2:26 of game time and saw Marist go 4-for-5 from the field. 
• A stepback 3-pointer from Angel Parker made it a 27-22 game with 5:28 to play in the second. 
• Marist would use the last five minutes of the second to build it lead to 39-26 with the help of a 12-4 run.
• At the break, Angel and Aaliyah combined for 20 of Niagara's 26 points with 10 apiece. 
 
Third Quarter
• Niagara pulled within 11-points, 49-38 in the third, but the Red Foxes had a 60-43 advantage by quarter's end. 
• Angel had six points in the quarter, followed by Lore Porter with three and four others with two. 
• Niagara was 8-for-19 from the field in the frame, while Marist was 10-for-17 on its field goal attempts. 
 
Fourth Quarter
• The Purple and White outscored Marist 22-12 in the final quarter of play, getting as close as nine on three different occasions. 
• Niagara first trimmed the Red Foxes lead to single digits, 66-57, with 3:02 to play after an Olivia Mason jump shot. That capped off a 6-4 run by the Purple Eagles. 
• The ensuing possession by Marist made it a 68-57 game, but the Purple Eagles would respond with a driving layup from Aaliyah, her sixth field goal of the game. 
• Niagara would go on to score eight of the game's final 12 points, pulling with nine twice, 70-61 (1:04) and 72-63 (0:12), before Angel scored her ninth basket as time expired to give the contest its 72-65 final. 
 
Niagara Notes
Angel Parker was the Purple Eagles' leading scorer for the ninth time this season. It was also the junior's 11th game with five or more assists, seventh with five or more steals, and fourth with five or more boards. 
Aaliyah Parker finished the week averaging 16.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. The freshman has eight games with 10-plus points, the most by a first-year player in the MAAC this season.
Olivia Mason finished with eight points and six rebounds, the seventh time she finished with five or more in each category this season. 
• Niagara finished with 44 rebounds compared to 38 for Marist. The Purple Eagles had 19 offensive caroms on the night. 
• The Purple and White finished with 36 points in the paint, 22 off the bench, and 20 off turnovers. 
 
Up Next
• Niagara will welcome Siena and Quinnipiac to Monteagle Ridge next weekend. The Purple Eagles and Saint will play Thursday at 6 p.m., while the Bobcats are at the Gallagher Center Saturday at 1 p.m.
