Purple Eagles Fall To RIT In Overtime

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara hockey team (7-15-2, 6-8-2 AHA) was defeated by RIT (11-10-2, 7-6-2), 6-5, in overtime at Dwyer Arena on Saturday night. 

Game Recap
First Period
  • The Tigers got on the board first, scoring 6:54 into the period to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles. 
  • With a little less than two minutes to play in the first period, Ryan Cox evened the score, 1-1. He was assisted by Lars Rodne and Chris Harpur
  • The Purple Eagles took their first lead of the game in the final minute of the period, with Shane Ott putting one in the back of the net. Jason Pineo earned the assist and Niagara led the Tigers, 2-1, going into the first intermission. 
Second Period
  • RIT scored a little over 30 seconds into the second period to tie things up, 2-2. 
  • At 6:46, the Tigers reclaimed the lead, 3-2. 
  • Christian Gorscak quickly tied things up, 3-3, scoring a little over three minutes later. Ott and Harpur had the helpers. 
  • At 12:16, the Tigers scored on a power play, taking a 4-3 lead over the Purple Eagles. They scored again a little over 30 seconds later to take a two-goal lead, 5-3, which remained the score at the intermission. 
Third Period
  • Niagara was on the power play a little over two minutes into the third period. Albin Nilsson scored on the power play, assisted by Walker Sommer and Josef Mysak, to leave Niagara down by just one score, 5-4. 
  • Less than two minutes later, Zac Herrmann snuck one past the RIT goaltender to tie the score, 5-5. 
  • The Purple Eagles were strong on defense in the remainder of regulation and the teams were tied, 5-5, at the end of the period to send the game to overtime. 
Overtime
  • The Tigers scored 48 seconds into the overtime period to earn the 6-5 win over the Purple Eagles. 

Eagle's Eye On
  • Harpur and Ott led the team in points with two each. 
  • Herrmann had a team-high six shots, while Gorscak and Pineo each had four. 
  • Nilsson led NU in blocks with two. 
  • Chad Veltri (6-8-2) made 32 saves in goal. 

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles return to Dwyer Arena next week for a two-game series with Mercyhurst Jan. 28-29.
