Niagara Drops Seesaw Battle with Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Niagara (6-9, 3-4 MAAC) dropped a back-and-forth battle to Monmouth (8-5, 3-1 MAAC) by the final score of 61-56 in MAAC women's basketball action from OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, NJ. 
 
Angel Parker finished with a game-high 16 points while adding three rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Aaliyah Parker added 14 points and a team-high seven boards in 19 minutes off the bench. 
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• Angel scored Niagara's first five points, helping the Purple Eagles to an early 5-2 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. 
• Monmouth would go on a 13-4 run to take a 15-9 lead over Niagara, but Parker would hit a 3-pointer moments before the buzzer went off to put Niagara down three, 15-12, at the end of one. 
• Angel had eight points at the end of the first quarter as Niagara finished 5-for-13 from the floor as a team.
 
Second Quarter
• A 10-0 run that started with Parker's 3-pointer at the end of the first helped the Purple Eagles jump out to a 26-20 lead over Monmouth with 6:11 on the clock.  
• Four minutes later, Monmouth pulled within one, 28-27, but back-to-back baskets by the Parker sisters gave NU a 32-27 advantage. 
• After Monmouth pulled within one once again, Angel would drill her second 3-pointer of the game, this one closing the half and giving Niagara a 35-31 lead at the break. 
• The second quarter saw Niagara shoot 62.5 percent from the floor – its best quarter shooting the ball. 
 
Third Quarter
• Four-straight points to start the second half by Niagara gave the Purple Eagles their largest lead of the game, 39-31. 
• The Hawks would use the next 3:12 of game time to trim the NU lead back down to two, 40-38. 
• The final 4:13 of the quarter was all Niagara as the Purple Eagles maintained its lead and went up by six, 46-42, at the end of the frame with an Ally Haar jumper. 
• The Purple and White held the lead for the entire third stanza while shooting 33.3 percent on their field goal attempts. 
 
Fourth Quarter
• Monmouth retook the lead, 51-50, with a layup at the 4:32 mark, capping off a 9-2 spurt. 
• Niagara would score the following four game points, including three from Grimshaw, to go up 54-51. 
• It took less than one minute for Monmouth to jump back in front, 56-54. 
• With 28 seconds left, Aaliyah would make two at the line to tie the game at 56. 
• Five straight points would seal the deal for Monmouth and give the Hawks a 61-56 hard-fought win.
 
Niagara Notes
• Niagara falls to 7-9 all-time against Monmouth. 
• Angel finished with 16 points to earn her 12th game this season with 10 or more points. The junior also recorded her 10th game with three or more steals. 
• Freshman Aaliyah Parker scored 14 points, her 10th game reaching double figures. 
• Faulcon has scored five-plus in nine games this season, including five of the last seven.
• Niagara finished the game with a 36.2 percent mark from the field and a 61.5 percent clip at the charity stripe. 
• The Purple Eagles had 15 steals on the night, their seventh game with 15 or more steals.
• 36 of NU's 56 points came inside the paint.
