Niagara Defeats Binghamton, 2-1

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles men's soccer team (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the season as the team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats (2-1-0), 2-1, on Friday night.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles had an early chance as Rodrigo Almeida took a shot to the top of the net that was saved by the Bearcats' keeper.
  • In the 23rd minute, a well-placed shot from Ali Alomari hit off the post, sending the shot back in perfect position for Alomari to pass to Herman Aalberg, who fed the ball to Gabriel Mikina. Mikina scored to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead over the Bearcats.
  • In the 31st minute, off a beautifully placed free kick from Aalberg, Rafael Freitas headed the ball into the net to extend Niagara's lead, 2-0.
  • Mikina and Nuukele Gboe both had strong chances for the Purple Eagles in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but both shots were saved.
  • In the 65th minute, a shot from Aalberg almost hit its mark, but the Binghamton keeper once again made the save.
  • Gboe and Freitas created more opportunities for the Purple Eagles to add to their lead, but the keeper made the play to keep NU out of the net.
  • The Bearcats scored in the 83rd minute to cut Niagara's lead in half, 2-1, but the Purple Eagles remained strong on defense and earned the victory over the Bearcats.

Coach's Corner
  • "I'm so happy for all the guys," said head coach Bill Boyle. "They put their heads down this week after two losses and earned this win. We still have a very high ceiling and I can't wait to see them continue to grind towards even more growth!"

Eagle's Eye On
  • Mikina's goal was the fourth of his career and Freitas' goal was the third of his career.
  • Aalberg recorded a career-high two assists.
  • Freitas, Mikina and Gboe led the team in shots with three each. All three of Mikina's shots were on goal.
  • Nick Burke and Josh Savoni split time in net. Savoni had one save and Burke made three saves and allowed one goal.
