Purple Eagles Defeated By Utah Valley

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (0-2-0) were narrowly defeated by the Utah Valley Wolverines (1-0-1), 2-1, on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara had an early chance in the 10th minute of the game off a shot from Nuukele Gboe, but narrowly missed its target, sailing just over the top left corner of the net.
  • Less than four minutes later, Herman Aalberg created another opportunity for the Purple Eagles, but his shot was saved by the Utah Valley keeper.
  • In the 41st minute, Gabriel Mikina had a shot for NU, but the Wolverines got the save.
  • With three seconds remaining in the first half, the Wolverines scored to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the 60th minute, Gboe tied things up, 1-1, as his shot to the ride side of the net found its target.
  • The Wolverines reclaimed the lead, 2-1, in the 68th minutes of play.
  • Rodrigo Almeida almost put one in the net for the Purple Eagles in the final minutes of the game, but his shot missed his target.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Gboe's goal was the first of his career with the Purple Eagles and was NU's first goal of the season.
  • Aalberg and Gboe led the team in shots with two each.
  • Aalberg had a team-high two shots on goal.
  • Josh Savoni (0-1) made five saves in 90 minutes in net.

Coach's Corner
  • "Our guys are fighting hard, but it seems like every lapse we have, the opponent has capitalized", said head coach Bill Boyle. "These are good lessons if we can learn from them, but there are no cupcakes in Division I men's soccer. Binghamton and Syracuse will demand we are flawless to get a result. These are the lessons we need in order to compete for our league."
